So does this mean Solinsky and Tegenkamp are going for the 5K AR the following week? Or does this travel rule only apply to Rupp?

All this talk about Solinsky beating Rupp is absolutely hilarious. Let's talk accomplishments shall we? Remember that Solinsky is a few (three?) years older than Rupp.

World and Olympic teams

Rupp: 4 (2 Outdoor WC, 1 Olympics, 1 Indoor WC)

Solinsky: 1 (2009 WC)

Rupp finished 8th in the 10,000m in 2009 WC. Solinsky finished 12th in the 5,000m. Byond that we can't really compare them on the world stage because, well, Solinsky has only made the one team.

I'm a big Solinsky fan. His 2010 season was remarkable on so many levels and if that translates into similar success in 2011, he should be racing for a medal in the 5,000m final this summer.

But lets be real folks. When it comes to competing at the highest levels, Rupp has been there, and lived up to reasonable expectations every time.

I think in 2011 you will see both of these guys finishing in the top 5 of their respective races at the World Championships.

When comparing the two, you have to say that Solinsky has recently made the big jump, while Rupp coninues to progress in small incremental steps year after year. They are both at a point in their careers where the only remaining meaningful accomplishment is a WC or Olympic medal. That is a great place to be, but also a somewhat frightening place to be.

Well, that, I think, is the whole point of Alberto's approach here. He has no intention of Rupp holding that form from now until Worlds. Run a two month indoor season, culminating in an outdoor 10K. This race will be the dry run, if you will, for the "real" outdoor season. Then shut it down - 2 weeks no running and 2 weeks light running.

Then starting the last week of March you start back up, with a plan to peak for Worlds which will be 5 months out.

Not sure if it's been mentioned in the thread but this is the same track where Filbert Bayi and John Walker both ran under the 1500m world record at the 1974 commonwealth games.

To the idiot J Loco I just have to say are you really going to expose yourself as this stupid? The time difference between Portland and New Zealand is 3 hours (yes 21 hours ahead so in traveling you lose a day but its no different than someone living in NYC and flying to West Coast - 3 hours difference. In effect LA would be 21 hours ahead IF the dateline was in say Chicago.

Travel from Portland to New Zealand is about a 5 and a half hour flight to Hawaii and then a 7-8 hour flight from Hawaii to New Zealand and go with a 2 hour layover the travel time would be about 16 hours not including travel to and in the airport prior to flight and then baggage collection and local transport in New Zealand.

Or you could just fly PDX > LAX > AKL > CHC and save yourself the layover in Hawaii. Thought they are flying into Sydney AUS first I'm fairly sure.

It's not that bad of a flight, the US to NZ flight would be much nicer than a east to west coast domestic flight for sure.

Who the eff is pacing this thing, and how long are they going to hold it?

I can't think of a lot of non-Africans who are going to be good to go much beyond 5k in 13:25 at this time of year (aside from the ones racing in Oz, that is).

That track is so fast in Christchurch I ran 8:05 for 3000m there, and I'm not even a runner.

It's official New Zealand is now a Rupp-certified country.
