It's true that no matter how well-behaved a dog is, there are always times when instincts set in.

My large (80 lb) dog and I were out on a run in a nature preserve. I let him off the leash and he was running ahead of me. He had never shown any agression in the 1.5 years of his life.

A deer ran out in our path and he jumped on its back and brought it down. Its neck was broken and it was dead by the time I got up to it.

Point being, dogs are dogs.

as a jogger that loves dogs and used to be a runner, i would have done the same thing he did to protect my son (if i had one). in this situation, the risk with the dog was too great. when i am confronted by a dog, a simple kick or punch does the job of scaring off the dog. But having your young son who can't defend himself yet is a different story, he is too vulnerable. a dog isn't going to attack the much larger of the two. Sorry pooch.

This is the only thing that has a chance of working if you are not throwing rocks or can get your hands on a good sized stick. (or Hanzo steel)

Most dogs will back down. But not always.

Nope - true. I had to get him neutered, put up an invisible fence, cage him whenever people come over, and my girlfriend still wants to put him down. He is on a "short leash" but hasn't done anything like this since.

Yeah, I am still scared of the dogs, but this is my best effort not to show it. I figure if they are going to attack anyway, at least I've psyched myself up to defend myself.

D2, you need an object lesson in reality from a poorly trained Blue Heeler. Some dogs are good, and some dogs are motherf***ers. The guy was defending himself in what was likely a life and death situation, if not for himself, for his seven year-old kid.

If you're so passionate about dogs' rights, get out there and support the creation of laws that protect aggressive, irrational dogs. Good luck with that.

People need to keep their dogs on leashes unless they are in a designated leash free area, no exceptions. Be a responsible owner.

I would venture to say 100% of dogs are territorial, so the owner was a dumbass for leaving her dog outside unattended/untethered. Would have been just as stupid if the father had left the 7- year old unattended. In this case, the sharper of the two guardians ensured the safety of his ward. It's sad there was loss of life, but that neighborhood's probably better off without that dog. It would be even better off without a delinquent dog owner.

I wonder how many LetsRunners that dog would have killed if they were in the place of that 32-year old at that time?

Put him down because he killed an animal???? That makes no sense whatsoever. Just because a dog still has instincts to hunt down prey doesn't mean they will be aggressive toward people. Hell, my mixed breed, VERY submissive mutt has left a few rabbit carcasses in our yard but she sure in the hell doesn't try to maul anyone. She isn't even aggressive with any other dogs she meets.

Did you dog start acting aggressive to people after that? What breed?
