As for the people who say he needs to win the big ones before he can be counted as one of the greatest, it's not Cliff's fault his team couldn't get the job done. He won both his starts against the Yankees, but the Phillies blew it all other games he didn't pitch.
I'm a fan of Lee, but it is really not fair to say he won both his starts and the rest of his teammates just couldn't get the job done. He pitched great in game 1, but in game 5 he got knocked around a bit. If memory serves correctly he gave up 5 earned runs in 7 innings. His teammates were still able to get him the win with their hitting. The final was 8-6.

Vida Blue would own Cliff Lee if he were still pitching today.
Let's compare their postseason stats:
Vida Blue: 1-5 4.31 ERA
Cliff Lee: 7-0 1.26 ERA
Halladay needs to win today or skip the plane ride back to Philly.
To give up Lee and have his upgrade lose TWO games in one series would not bode well.
Here is where Philly's big three need to shine.
Halladay, Hamels and Oswalt have three consecutive must win games. With each win the Phillies can grow more confident and SF more tight.
It all starts today. Hallady vs Lincecum @SF with Philly facing elimination.
While Cliff Lee sits back and waits his turn to either try and pitch his team to their first World Series or prepare for game one the World Series.
It's always bad being down 3-1 in a series, but I have not given up hope like many people have. Here are my thoughts on the series so far:
Game 1: Neither Halladay or Lincecum brought their A-game. Phillies could have, and should have won. Burrell should have been rung up on that 3rd strike that was called a ball. You could tell by his grin that even he knew that it was a strike. Both pitchers complained about the inconsistency of the calls at the plate. Should have been out #3 of the inning. Next pitch he hits a double and knocks in a run. Next batter knocks in another run. I try not to get too caught up on calls by the ump since bad calls can go both ways, but sometimes it is very hard.
Game 2: Phillies won quite easily (6-1).
Game 3: Giants won quite easily (0-3).
Game 4: It was a tough loss for the Phillies. I was yelling at the TV when they sent Ruiz home. As soon as the ball was hit I could tell he would not be able to go from 2nd to home. It was too shallow of a base hit. Could have scored another run had they held him. Phillies would have the lead going into the 9th and pitched Lidge rather than Oswalt on short rest. Lidge has been pitching well, I think he would have closed it out.
I was expecting the Giants to win 2/3 of their home games and Phillies to win 3/4 of their home games so nothing too surprising for me. Phillies don't play well in SF, but if they can survive this game I am very optimistic. I know all of this makes me sound like a homer making excuses for his team, but I just wanted to point out my reasoning for not being very concerned.
Oh well if the umpire called a different game this would have happened. Burrell should have been out 3, but there was plenty of other times where the ump's lousy calling kept say Tim L or Roy in the game longer than they should have been there. Hence, they threw a lot more pitches. Say if the ump had a consistent strike zone, maybe Jayson Werth would have never gotten that pitch that he hit for a 2 run homer? The game is what it is.

After I typed that whole rant I hesitated to actually post it because I knew it would get this type of response. Did you thoroughly read what I wrote? I'm not blaming the umpires and trying to say it should be 3-1 Phillies. I'm just saying that they are not blown out. I'm not concerned about the Phillies. Of all the teams that have been down 3-1 in a series, I'd say they have one of the best chances of coming back. That is all.

That's not 10-15 with some mediocre offense either. 10-15 with the Yankees. You have to really suck to do that.
By the way, after August 1st, 1-7 with a 6.61. They were 1-3 in his no decisions.
I agree, I'd start CC on short rest. Or one of the younger pitchers.
Glad to see I was right on AJ Burnett. Hopefully the Yankees can use CC in relief (Game 7) if necessary. He did throw 110+ pitches in only 6 innings though. Frankly, I doubt the Yankees can do it, although they did get to Lee last year once. We'll see what happens. The odds of both Hughes and Pettitte pitching well are slim though. If they get through, it lines up for Burnett G1 of WS!!! Maybe they'll pitch him three times and go for some records!
Really, though, if they don't use CC, I assume he'll come back in Game 1 of WS. Again, I doubt it will get that far, but that would be my expectation.
Once again, for the record:
I hate AJ.
If Lee wins tonight he makes his way onto the list. The point of saying he hasn't won "a big one" is not a slam on him, but the pressure he will be feeling tonight will be 10 times higher than any game he has probably pitched in his life. I just don't see the thought that someone who hasn't won pitched a game that won something (pennant/championship) could be the best "ever".
Fact is, half of his wins are in the divisional round, compared to a guy like Gibson who went 7-2 in the World Series, there is a HUGE difference. In 1967 alone Gibson won three games in the span of nine days, allowing an average of one run and 4 1/2 hits a game. Sorry, but while Lee is working his way on the list, he has a way to go before finding his way into the "best ever" category.
This is about 9 minutes long, but it's all of his 17 Ks in the 1968 WS. Awesome:

10 times higher than last year's WS?
I was a little worried last night. Halladay wasn't pitching his good stuff. Fortunately he still got the job done. Lot more confidence heading to Philly.
What was up with his bunt?!
doc was playing with a messed up leg (groin injury).
that bunt was totally foul, but hey, i'm not complaining.
So if they called the bunt a foul he would get a couple more chances and would likely have made a successful bunt to move the runners eventually. It's not like they called a foul home run fair.
That missed call likely changed nothing.
But it almost cost the Phillies an out at third and first.
I was really wondering why they pulled Halladay until this morning.
Three innings of relief pitchers with a one run lead is scary but the four of them did great.
The Werth homer was nice.
Cliff Lee would never get hurt in a post-season game.
He's the Jason Rexing of baseball.
He could win wearing Converse All-Star high tops.

Well, my guess is Cliff Lee won't be feeling much pressure tonight. If he wins tonight, it would be in a relief role, a highly unlikely scenario. Cliff Lee will win game 7 tomorrow night, if it proves to be necessary.

Yanks v Phils world Series would be a bore. It's a lets see what money can by series. I'd rather see some scrappy team make it. I would love to see Giants-Rangers, but I know that is wishful thinking.
I thought it was wishful thinking too but I'm fired up about the rangers, they had an interesting season on and off the field. Beating the stinking yankees and striking out ARod to put them to sleep was perfect!

I'm with you. I think the Rangers are playing better right now than either NL team.
None of the Phillies big 3 could win two games in a series so the Phillies will not be taking on Cliff Lee in the World Series.
(Oswalt won one game and only gave up one earned run in his second start so it was really the hitting that failed. Three one-run losses)
