During college, I had to work 12 hours a day and take night classes, at a physically demanding job. What then? Not everyone has your ideal "well just relax" attitude.
For these people they CANNOT get ideal recovery, not even close. These people CANNOT reach their potential in running, or any other demanding aerobic sport for that matter. Not until this part of their life is over. Alan wasn't saying that you could. This is stuff you learn in middle school.
By the way, in cycling the recovery adage goes like this: Don't stand when you can sit and don't sit when you can lay down. It is a great idea to take a protein shake right after training. Recent research has confirmed what many have said for a long time: The shot of protein stimulates HGH production. Carbs with this inhibits the action of the release of the HGH somewhat, but increases the glycogen resynthesis ... so it is a balancing act.
Some that I know who are really into the art of recovery take a 25g shot of protein after the workout with skim milk (aiding resynthesis) and then take another shot of protein (in WATER) before bed which has all the good effects of protein during sleep, but upregulates the release of HGH higher than it normally would during sleep.
