yeah, that's what i thought. most letsrun.com-ers can't even break 15 minutes in the 5k, talk is talk, but when jonesy goes to bed, he goes to bed as a former-world record holder. who here can say that??

Great, and Magic Johnson won multiple NBA titles and MVP titles. Didn't mean much when he tried coaching, though. Nobody here has contested Jones's record as an athlete. That's YOUR strawman. Come back when you're ready to discuss the topic at hand, his record as a coach and why both elite and subelite runners are making like bananas and leaving that group.
well, if you'd like to look at facts, jorge torres (the only american olympian coached by jonesy) has remained with him. so i think his record as coach is still fairly good - how many coaches can say they coached an olympian?
also, not that any letsrunners would notice, but his sub-elite group has made giant strides as well.

Jason Hartmann lost his Nike sponsorship and was forced to sign with Strands (a buriel ground for athletes that need to retire) his success under Jonesy got him his Nike deal back.
Pat Rizzo had nothing after leaving Hansons also went to Strands for a brief period. Trained with Jonesy and got a deal with Mizuno.
Both of these guys will either retire or be back with Strands after 2012. Meanwhile Jonesy will be signing posters at every major road race in the world and enjoying the good life.
I guess I understand the frustration of guys like this. They will both be over 30 years old with no way to pay the bills and Jonesy will do whatever he wants for as long as he lives.
Strands is a "buriel ground for athletes"? Seems to be working out okay for Justin Young.

Rizzo only got Mizuno (gear) because of his association with Strands, who works with Mizuno.
Hartmann was dropped by Strands. Not the other way around.
I understand your tendency to want to defend Steve Jones. He's a distance running legend, and a nice guy. However, he is not a very good coach. And the more runners train with him, the more that becomes fairly obvious.

your claim is steve jones isn't a good coach, well the facts show he still coaches jorge torres (among many others). apparently he thinks he's good enough to have him as he coach.

Strands didn't drop their best athlete at the time, Hartman left, it's not that hard to figure out. why don't you go to their website and see how their athletes compare to Hartman, there's not a athlete close to Hartman beyond Young now, who's marathon time is still slower than Hartman's. Hartmann is friends with Ritz. This has more to do with him receiving Nike "kit" than anything. Nike will drop you in an instant if you have one or two bad races. In short, Nike doesn't give a shit about a runner of Hartmann's caliber.
Finally, Strands would not pay Rizzo in the first place.

1) Australians refer to it as "gear" and not "kit"! "Kit" originated from you yanks!
2) I think Troop has better things to do than write in here. Considering Hartmann stated his coaching move at the 20km and the topic was around how weird the interview was, why would Troop start this thread?

"readernaut" I think the English, Welsh, Kiwi's and pretty much most Commonwealth countries use the term mate also! I know we don't use it but singling out Troop just because the word "mate" has been used is a bit of a long bow!
From what I know he wouldn't give a care in the world about this and he is the type of honest person that if he did write in, he would use his name and not an alias...

So you all can put an end to the speculation, and to give some historical perspective to Jonesy and his group of runners.
I am a current member of the BX group, and one of the original members. The "original" group began because Pete Julian was training with Jonesy in 2005 and wanted some company in his training sessions. So his brother-in-law and 2:20 marathoner, Sean Nesbitt started running the sessions with him. John Supsic, myself and Eric Griffiths joined them shortly after. Then Chris England, Justin Young and Chester Kurtz also joined in and soon we had a "group". Actually, I remember that Pete and Justin really wanted to develop a group that could get some sponsorship in 2006. I think Jonesy just wanted the athletes to get some support, so he seemed ok with coaching a group. What was unique about the team was that we all got along as friends and had a lot of fun.
In 2006, we had enough members, along with Clint Wells, TJ Doherty and John Tribbia, to form 2 teams to compete in the Marathon Relay Champs. The "A" team won and the "B" team was 3rd or 4th. Since there were a couple of international runners on the team, we also put together a non-USATF team which came 5th. In order to compete in these USATF champs, we had to form a club and thus BX was formed.
Shortly after, Pete and Alan Culpepper decided to form Tempo Sports with Jonesy and Alan coaching the small group (including Shane Culpepper) and supported by NYRR, etc. Over the next couple of years, Tempo picked up Jorge, Ed, Cabada, and Jonesy also helped Kathy Butler and a few other professional athletes.
After Pete started coaching @ Metro and Alan retired, it was mainly Jorge and Cabada and then Hartman, the Slatterys and Troopy. The BX group remained strong and continued to run Sunday long runs aside the Tempo Sports professionals. The BX group at one time was about 12-14 men and couple of women. Now it is a handful of men and 12-14 women at times.
Things have changed a lot. Age and other priorties have played more of a role than anything. When you put 20+ strong-willed athletes into a group with one training mindset, the drama outside of running is bound to have some effect. But we are all adults.
I hope that anyone reading this thread can understand that there is a ton of respect by all of the athletes for Jonesy as a man first, coach second. It is tough to watch Hartmann's video, you can see that he was hurt that things sort of fell apart. And from a coaching standpoint, Jonesy did play a large role in helping both Cabada and Hartman win Twin Cities in respective years, as well as giving Jorge the confidence to compete so well in NYC.
I'd like to think that it is all just a part of the sport. That friendships are more important than the coach/athlete relationship. But these are all proud and committed people. Some don't work out, some have. I can tell you one thing with certainly. No matter who has come and/or left the two groups coached by Jonesy, all of those involved will continue to rout for the others.
I don't care who Troop, Cabada, Rizzo, Hartman, Slattery, Young, Torres, etc. is inevitably coached by or what direction they take ... they are all good people and we definitely hope they succeed!
So lay off the personal attacks, especially when it is based on speculation and false information. Those of you who continue to think the personal attacks show some sort of weird support for the sport... well I guess you can do so knowing you are just full of crap!

Apparently not. In a functional training group, you show up and train together and then get on with your day. The "drama outside of running" only has an effect if the leadership and membership allow it. The women's side is still intact and the men's has basically disappeared so you're not really telling the whole story.
Were you just reading through 2 week old threads to come up with that?
