Dumbass 17:50 min guy on my team insists on running like Pre.

i didn't even waste time reading the whole post or anybody's responses the headline tells all and what you need to do is find a wooded area, have your team pin him down and make him do THE IMPOSSIBLE SIT-UP which I can explain to you if you don't know what that is

false, 5k is is 5000m. 3 miles is 1609m x 3= 4,827m roughly.

leaving the competitor 173 meters to complete.

assuming he is running 17:50 pace, he is running approx 10.4 mph. lets assume he runs 20% faster during his kick, he would then be traveling at 12.5 mph or 4:48 pace.

At that pace it would take him about 31 seconds to complete the last 173m. any elite (national level) HS competitor can close this quickly.

The "pre-style" team mate is probably taking closer to 50 seconds due to the hydrogen ions built up in his muscles which will give him that "burning feeling" we all know and love as soon as he tries to hit his extra gear.

I get the point of your post and that's cool, but really if he's dying he isn't running 17:50 pace. He's, for the purpose of most of this thread, running a 7 to 7:30 mile at the momemt he may or may not decide to kick it home to impress the women folk. So wouldn't any increase in pace need to be figured from there? From what I've ever witnessed though, the early race glory boys aren't the late race glory boys, so I'd be willing to bet he just drags his balls home and starts planning his next race's assault on Pre.

I am in agreement. he's probably that kid that trots across the line and looks at the coach with an "i don't know what just happened" look on his face.

If I recall correctly when Pre was asked how he was going to win the Munich 5k, he replied he was going to do it by running the last mile in under 4 minutes.

More to the point of the thread though, Pre never said he went out way faster than pace. Pre would lead the race but this did not mean he went out fast, he just wouldn't go out slow... big difference. Pre would have enough left to close fast unlike people that go out too fast.
