Maybe it's just me but was everyone who ran back then ridiculously fast? And they all ran a lot of races. It's not that they just ran a few times a year. No secret other than just running, lots and lots of running. Something about that era just makes me think of toughness.

Yeah, but we New Englander's know how to appreciate a nice day, seeing that they come so infrequently. You guys in Cali take 'em for granted.
i always found that argument a little silly, like I said i grew up there...i always thought this argument is akin to saying 'it feels great when you stop hitting yourself over the head with a hammer'

Back then, racers raced. If they weren't fit or fast enough to keep up with the leaders, they ran as far and fast as they could to give themselves a benchmark. Then they would go back and do more work to see if they could stay with the leaders longer the next time. Heady stuff.
Wish someone would reissue some of the striped Dolphin shorts.
I would so strut my stuff in a pair of those why I struggle to finish mid-pack (OK, worse) in low-level races.

#13 has a more than passing resemblance to Ian Thompson.

I believe the race route is exactly the same at least since 1974.
There was a toughness about it, I know what you mean. They (we) ran a lot of races and a lot of miles, through injuries and no one really cared about diet. We didn't know as much as we do now about it anyway.
No one burned out- ok maybe we peaked too early, but we just ran and didn't worry about over doing it.

I love the pic (Falmouth), but this looks like it was scanned from the newspaper and hence can't get a good looking copy. Is there a better resolution pic floating around.
