I am by no means fast, but I personally know quite a few elite runners, including Olympic team members, and none of them would be so petty as to make fun of people slower than them. Grow up.
You swear by ChiRunning or POSE
You end sentences without proper punctuation.
You belittle someone because their grammar isn't up to your standards. Or your handle is picayune!
That's better!
You're pretty much a D-bag.

Face it guys, we're all hobby joggers unless we're getting paid to do this. Some of us are fast and some are slow, but this is our hobby. We do it for fun.
Disagree, there's a distinct difference between genuinely competitive (or serious, some people prefer) runners and hobbyjoggers. There's a strong correlation between yuppie runners and hobbyjoggers.
OK, Hobbyrunners then. If you are not getting paid (or scholarship) it is a hobby no matter how serious/fast/"competitive" you are.
You run for enjoyment

You get a fuelbelt
You take the fuelbelt on any run that's longer than 2 miles
You regularly post on daily, weekly, and monthly training threads or you post all your training on a personal blog
You wear more than 3 different pair of running shoes in a typical week
You wear armwarmers because you saw elites wearing them
You wear compression gear because you saw elites wearing it
You own a Boston jacket
You desperately want an age group award
You post lengthy race reports to your blog or running forums for 18:00+ 5k's
Your post-race meal is a burger and a beer
You care about what shirt a race gives out
You care about what's in the swag bag a race gives out
You care about the post-race food at a race
You have a Garmin
You use the term "training tool" (anyone who does is the real tool)
You have ever used the word "smileage"
You have ever read a Penguin column and agreed
What have I missed?
You missed those who participate in the jazzercise warm up before the race

Is that all you got? How about you give us a name and PRs so that we can confirm you are a sponsored professional runner.
Who is "we," fabler?

If anyone is afraid to have a burger and a beer after a race they are way too uptight about their diet.
Exactly. I love a good juicy burger (100 percent Angus, please.....) and a nice COLD ICY BEER....
Dang, I love being a "hobby jogger".....kiss my pretty azz, you snotty elites!!!
yeah OP is a douche. has probably never been around elites. most of us love a burger and beer after a race.

If you are a collegiate runner (not even on scholy) then you are getting LOTS of free stuff- apparel, shoes, bus rides, massage treatments, academic help, food, etc, etc...So even then I wouldn't consider it a hobby because you are running for services and gear.
No fuel belts, no arm warmers, no compression gear, no jazzercise before races, no iPod, no Garmin.
I plead guilty to owning a Boston jacket--but only wear it on formal occasions. (It goes well with patent leather heels and a little black dress--oh, and it nicely complements the Boston drawstring bag.)
If I ever run an 18-minute 5k, the world will hear about every detail of it. Ordinarily, though, I don't post dreams instead of race reports--even on this site where dreams become reality.
While not "desperate" for age group awards, I confess to liking them, especially gift certificates or merchandise.
Post-race food: Beer and a salmon burger.
Swag: I won't run a race for the swag, but I won't turn down good swag just to be cool.
You can call me a hobbyjogger. You can call me slow. I just don't want to be called "injured"--because, as a matter of fact, I do enjoy running.

My criteria for hobbyjogger...
1. You take 1-2 days off completely (no running) to taper before a 5k road race.
2. You try (and think) you can run your best marathon off 30-35 miles per week.
3. You think CrossFit or the like will help take your race times way down instead of adding more miles to those 30-35 mile weeks.
4. You wear special costumes on race days.
5. You race in a pair of 12ozPLUS regular trainers (not designed for racing)
6. In search for better training and motivation, you frequent the forums of RunnersWorld.com, BodyBuilding.com, and/or CoolRunning.com beginner sections.
7. You think UnderArmour/NikeShox makes respectable distance running shoes.
8. Your typical training pace of ~8-10min/mile is within 1min/mile of your 5k race pace.
that's all i can think of for now. i dont think hobbyjogger can be defined by times per say, there can be some slow people who train smart but are still relatively slow due to lack of talent, age, etc.
^THIS is pretty good description. Nobody is really a hobbyjogger on LetsRun. Everyone on LetsRun is pretty serious about running.
...If you run in North Face gear.
YOU are NOT elite!
