It certainly should be a possibility for a school that charges $50000+. Especially after penny-pinching with having one coach trying to dabble on both sides of the spectrum which obviously did not work since the women's program and men's programs both went downhill once the split coaching experiment began...
What are the chances Wake is still after a female head? Could they possibly lure Gibby's wife in from W&M and bring them both in as a package deal. Co-head coaches if you will. This way they have the focus needed for both men's and women's distance. Would probably be a step up for Gibby and Newberry with similar prestige and academic characteristics, but better off overall as a BCS level school.

Or Ben Thomas and his wife at Radford.... or Karen Harvey and Kevin Sullivan. Lots and lots of husband and wife duos who could step in.

The problem with Wake for someone like Gibby or any of the other bigger names that have been mentioned may be the lack of support. Gibby has a great environment with support from the highest levels down at WM. Thats an important part of success.
I am not an insider but my overwhelming impression for many years is that men's Track/XC is the red headed step child of WFU athletics. It seems to be Wellman's last priority. Is that why it took so long to fire Bennett? For years the men's team has complained and petitioned him to make the change. Would he have accepted such horrendous ACC showings in football, basketball, women's field hockey?

The question for Gibby and his wife would be how many more years is Stimson going to coach? If Gibby and his wife both coached at Wake, I would bet the amount of money they would make would be significantly more. $20,000 more per year over 5 years is $100,000 which is not insignificant for track coaches.
The reason track and cross country is not higher profile at Wake is because men's soccer makes the NCAA final Four every year as does women's field hockey. If track/cross country had that same level of success, there would be more attention.
Wake's got good facilities (there is a 1.5 mile rock dust trail 100 meters from the track) with other trail systems in the area.
The right coach with some organizational skills would do great things at Wake.

My assumption is that Gibby is in line to be the next Director of Track and Field at W&M if Stimson retires. If you look at the salaries online from the public university databases, Stimson earns significantly more than Gibby (Off the top of my head I think it's $75k versus $47k). Stimson moves as if he's 75 but he may not be more than about 57 to 58 years old.
A native of Falconer, New York, Stimson graduated with honors from Ohio University in 1971 and holds a master’s degree from Miami (Ohio). As an undergraduate, he was the All-Ohio and Central Collegiate shot put champion, as well as a two-time MAC shot put champion. He concluded his athletic career by competing in both the NCAA and AAU national championships in the shot put.

Other thoughts about the Wake job. The women could make nationals in cross country this year if things go well. With the Nosenko sisters, some of the other girls on the team, and the recruits coming in (I'm hearing reports that they may signed some overseas talent this year), they could challenge for a nationals spot.
The guys team needs a little work but they'll be so much excitement with a new coach, the guys team will improve.

Gibby and his wife make a combined $87,000. That is crap money for the job they do. My guess is that Annie was making close to that number. Not that it's their job for the taking (Thomas from VT is a good candidate), but the question is how comfortable are they at W&M? Clearly they have worked hard to build very good programs (especially on the men's end). Gibby has been there a very long time and might rather wait five years for big Dan to retire than to set out on his own. That said, if Gibby does wait, W&M is his. Tempting.
All in all, I think Wake has bigger upside than W&M in women's xc and both genders in track. Not sure what the support is like for men's cross at Wake, but I think they could be very good.
I'm sure the budgets and scholarship numbers are much bigger at Wake than W&M. Gibby left W&M before to go to Stephen F. Austin. Ironically he went to Stephen F. Austin right after Annie Bennett left there to go to Wake.
Money is certainly an issue for any candidate as well as how far they think they can take the program. There are pros and cons to Wake or staying at William and Mary.

It will take a few years on the men's side to bring the squad back to contention for ACC titles and NCAA berths

Gibby and his wife are alumni
State school- can continue to bring a slew of 9:20-9:25 guys and see who develops
Doesn't have to run his team hard at their conference meet which sets up well for NCAA berths in cross country

Yeah, I think the women will be good. Pretty sure only one of the Nosenkos ran regionals last year and she did well (top 10?), so just think if they were both in top form this year. I also heard that their number two runner from regionals last year (Burns) had mono at the time... No results from her all indoor and out but I bet she'll be ready to rip it for her senior year. And they are getting overseas talent, at least one girl that I know of. Plus 4-5 others, including Nicole Irving from NY(3rd at nats last weekend). Now they just need a coach! SOunds like the boys will benefit from losing Annie but I wonder how the girls feel about it.

Being public, I'm guessing it's cheaper to go there (which means easier to get recruits, plus subsidize athletic aid with academic aid = larger rosters). Weaker conference = greater possibility for success and support from the AD. W&M looks like they have the upper hand-- nope, not seeing a "constrained budget".
Interesting site and data. I'm impressed that W&M can keep so many people on the roster.
It would be interesting to see what the athletic scholarships totals were for each of the schools in Division I by sport. You always here the rumors out there but it's tough to get the data. It doesn't appear that scholarships monies, coaching salaries(and maybe even recruiting money) counts against the operating budget for these schools.
