If you watch some of the better races from mt. sac, their commentary is pretty good. One of the guys mentioned earlier, i think its justin, seems to know a good deal of stuff off the top of his head. But if 2 or 3 guys are doing the job of camera man, internet tech guy, interviewer, stat guy, commentator ect, obviously it wolnt be as flawless as a multi-person broadcast on NBC or something, but if you surprised a lot of the mainstream commentators wouldnt know angela bizzarri, jeff demps, robby andrews ect. if they passed them on the street. The people at websites like flotrack likely would. Also, like it was said earlier, The traditional outlets for coverage only cover the best and the fastest...making it a lot easier to make interesting. 2-3 hours of track and field in one program vs. 2-3 days.
