The fact is that what is there to say during 6 heats of the 10k or the unseeded high school 4x16. You cant compare it to commentary done for meets like USAs because those are very different. A lot of these heat sheets change as people scratch, numbers arent easily visible, and often nobody changes positions for laps upon laps. How much is there to say about some of these runners in the slow 5k and 10k heats. These are heats that nobody else commentates on at all and if they did, it would probably be horrendous. They do EVERY RACE at a meet. Im sure if they chose a few, they could get every name down w/ their PRs and accomplishments. That cant be expected for hundreds of races. Some of the guys are pretty good, some not as good. Lets be real folks...coverage of anything other than the elite runners at 2 or three meets a year is new to everyone so we have to all change the pre-conceived notion of what to expect. The great thing about the internet is its not perfect and polished. Youtube gets a hell of a lot more hits a day than hulu.
Also, I was watching a MLB broadcast the other day...those a re long with a lot of down time....much like 6 10k heats. The announcers talked about tattoos for an entire inning, so mentioning the Princeton women wearing ribbons in their hair uniformly, or somebodies spikes isnt that crazy.

If you watch some of the better races from mt. sac, their commentary is pretty good. One of the guys mentioned earlier, i think its justin, seems to know a good deal of stuff off the top of his head. But if 2 or 3 guys are doing the job of camera man, internet tech guy, interviewer, stat guy, commentator ect, obviously it wolnt be as flawless as a multi-person broadcast on NBC or something, but if you surprised a lot of the mainstream commentators wouldnt know angela bizzarri, jeff demps, robby andrews ect. if they passed them on the street. The people at websites like flotrack likely would. Also, like it was said earlier, The traditional outlets for coverage only cover the best and the fastest...making it a lot easier to make interesting. 2-3 hours of track and field in one program vs. 2-3 days.
Just tuned in for Flotrack coverage and came on right before the women's leader reached the 2k. Flotrack annoucner, "And we're coming up on the 2k spilt I believe.....here's a pack of four we'll try to get numbers and names." Okay how you jump from the 2k spilt which you announce but don't give to a trailing pack almost 70m back?
Nothing change...Flotrack still sucks! I'm done watching that trainwreck they call coverage.
