Yes, but keep in mind that, at the very top academic colleges, they're still looking for the very best students from any given high school. Here are MIT's stats for the latest applicant group (incoming September 2009):

Junior year I expect to hit ~9:18(9:35 last year on 30mpw winter base).
Im ranked 11th in my class of 489.My unweighted GPA is 3.8x or 3.9x atm(depends what I get on finals next week). I take all honors and AP classes and that crap.
206 on the PSATs without having had an english class or math class in the 5 months before(semester schduling)So im looking at ~2060 at least on the SATs, higher if I actually try and it isnt the day after homecoming.

I was just browsing a whole college forums thing and everyone there was a mega nerd who basically did math for fun and have 2300s on their SATS and all told each other they had only a slim to decent chance to get into a good college.

Yes, if you were sub-9:20 as a junior you would have a good shot at running for an Ivy school, provided that your other numbers remain at the same level or improve (as you projected).
Do think about prepping seriously for the SAT, though. Moving from a sub-2100 to 2200+ would help you significantly. Moving to the top 10 (not top 10%, but top 10) in your class would be a help, too, so good luck on those finals!

Well I just took a practice SAT today and got a 2110. Still, it seems too easy.

No disrespect, but I don't think citing MIT's admissions standards gives any hike school senior or junior a better idea of their chances of getting into an ivy. MIT is D3 and likely has lower athletic standards and higher academic standards for their recruits. It's just not relevant to this discussion. I'm still a big fan of your posts though Avogabro.
I agree with other posters that the standards vary throughout the ivies. I got into one of the mediocre ivies with 1750 SAT, top 5% of hike school class credentials. I was a 4:16 miler, decent xc runner.

Standards do vary throughout the Ivies, but you need to be strong academically, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. The Ivies are getting record-high or near-record-high early action applications, so you will need to be strong academically but be sure that your extracurriculars can make you stand out. At least at Harvard, they like well-rounded people so if you are strong running-wise as well as "wicked smaht" (intentional), you have a strong chance of getting a second look.

As to your original question: Yes, coaches recommendations can influence admissions decisions. That said there is not that much leeway granted to XC/Track programs. When I was at Cornell the average SAT of all admitted students was just under 1400 Math+Verbal while the team average was just over 1350 Math+Verbal. Everyone on the team had a 3.7+ HS GPA without exception. If your SATs average less than 650 per section then you better be pretty fast.
