Does anyone think German Fernandez will repeat as NCAA 1500 meter Champion?

i got no inside scoop for ya, sorry, but how much news did we get last year when basically out of nowhere German runs a 3:56 mile?? I don't know maybe they are keeping things on the down low, because it worked last year? We will just have to see what happens when he races.... my dig on your post was for the blame game, if people are going to blame Smith/OSU for a Fernandez injury, I feel it is only fair to blame Lananna/Oregon for Centro and Wheating.... I don't really blame any of them I am just trying to point out how stupid it is to point blame, especially something like an injury, because injuries are basically part of the game in running... especially when you are training at the levels these guys are training at...

Lets start a thread for Great HS runners who HAVE not improved since they arrived in Oregon and under Vin...

I think you're missing the basics of athletic development. You don't take an 8:34/4:00 guy out of high school and specialize him in the mile. You take a 4:00/1:49 guy and do it.

The mile and 5k require the same percentages of aerobic and anaerobic contribution, according to one of the other threads (84/16), in which case your five k and milers should be the same (and look at how many milers have dominated the 5k when they have tried it, from Coghlan and Aouita in the 80s to El Guerrouj and Lagat in the 90s). Fernandez seems equally talented at mile and 5k, with the world junior indoor record in the former, the NCAA title against a strong field in the fifteen, and the American junior record in the 5k all at 18. Anyway, we have no evidence whatsoever of Fernandez's low end ability, since he hasn't raced anything below the 1500.

You would be hard pressed to find any world class 800-1500 guys in the last twenty years. Nevertheless, in the same time span we have had Venuste Nyongabo, the Olympic gold medalist at 5000 and sub 3:30 1500 guy. Never ran 800 competetively. You have Bernard Lagat. Never ran 800 competetively. Then you have the 1500 meter king El G, never ran 800 competetively. Yet the coaching genius that you are would have us believe that all these guys started their careers as 800 meter guys. Yup, your right, all the great milers were concentrating on the 800 as teenagers.

He was not injured in June. Then all of a sudden he was running poorly in October, was injured and had not run all summer. He didn't look look all that injured during cross country when he ran, but still didn't run well and his performances got worse.

Now he is skipping indoor races that he ran a year ago, there is still no word about him, how he is doing or when he will compete.

It was mentioned several times that German had injuries. The video mentioned the scope of it. "Battled all summer", "Did not start running until October", and almost as important "German does not want me to talk about this crap".

They have no requirement to fill you, or anyone else in on German's injury status. In short, it's none of your business.

That does not keep you from spouting off on a message board about things you know nothing about and calling them "fact". Or the even more idiotic opinion that German did not "look" injured. Just more proof that real runners should stay off message boards.

Beijing 1500 medalists:

Asbel Kiprop- 1:43.17

Nick Willis- 145.54

Mehdi Baala- 143.15

If you want to include Rashid Ramzi, 144.05 PR, was world champion in 800m in 2005.

The only person of those 4 who have run the 5000 is Nick Willis, in a turtle-pace 13:27.

Plus, there is the entire list that XCC provided, although I don't think El G ever ran 1:42. He did close the Olympic 1500 final in 1:46 though, more than an example of his capability. And no, I didn't pull anything out of my ass. As a general rule, it's much more difficult for an athlete to find speed that isn't already there for a lower event, than it is to build strength for a higher event.

Now, you also seem to misunderstand me. I never said that German won't be able to compete in the mile, even on the world stage. He will do fantastic in it. It is just of my opinion that his greater event will be the 5k.

Kiprop: started running 800's internationally last season, after several seasons as an elite 1500 runner. Not the other way around.

Bottom line is: Saying that just because Fernandez did not run the 800/Mile in high school means that he cannot become a miler is stupid.

You do know you're talking to two different people, right? Did you even read the post I made?

First of all, you didn't pay attention to any of the things I said. I'm talking about ME, not XCC. I never said Fernandez couldn't be a great miler, all I said was that he should not specialize in it, in the same way the people you are listing don't specialize in the 5000m!! It can very easily be said that while they had FANTASTIC 5k times, that they don't compare to what they did in the middle distances. I believe German will have a good mile and a great 5k. What is hard to understand about that?

Secondly, you can hardly compare those people to German to argue against what I'm saying! They moved UP from their natural events, not DOWN, which is what would be required for German to focus on the mile. I just don't think he has the natural speed to make the mile his best event. If he ever pops a competitive 800 time this season, I will change my mind.

That is all I will say on it. I don't expect you to change your mind, because this is no longer about what is logical, but rather the attitude of "I WANNA BE RIGHT". Time will tell.

IAAF points have GF's 3k and 5k times worth just a couple points fewer than his mile, the 3k better than the 5k (worth 13:21ish), and of course the mile (worth about 3:37 1500) was run indoors with no comp within ten seconds.

Webb's mile is worth 1:42.6!
