With as little scholarship as they invest in distance runners, who would've thought that OSU would have both cross country teams to Nationals.

You do realize the head men's coach is a distance guy? Also, with 18 scholarships on the women's side (plus being The Ohio State), I would imagine they have a fair amount of scholarships in distance, along with being a recruiting hotbed. So there is no reason for them not to do well.
Dear, OSU 2nd guy and up. Thank Jeff for running for OSU! Because without him you guys would have finished behind kent and wouldn't have made it out! I don't know how you guys made it out with the worst 10k times ever! Seriously the GLR got lucky this year! Other teams will sit home and laugh when you guys finish dead last! I know I will.

Haha, how do you really feel? Would of - could have - should have. Train hard, race harder and enjoy life - it really is too short.
Indiana is a brutal course that does not produce fast times, as evidenced by the NCAA results from 1999. The winning time was over 30 minutes. http://www.themwc.com/sports/c-xc/spec-rel/112299aab.html

A couple of years ago, all but two of the last 11 places were taken by the eastern teams not from Florida (and only one reasonable result was had (Princeton?) and that was worse than expected (although my memory is hazy). So, being as OSU was one of the last couple of teams in, it would not be a surprise for them to finish in the last couple of places, but lets see what the race actually brings us.

What if it was an error on the officials part? Both schools are Red and White colors and maybe they gave out the wrong sets of numbers. Just kiddin'

These results for the Women are very painful for me to look at. Ohio state and Wisconsin traded places this year.

From what I understand, they had a bunch of injuries and red shirted a lot of the top women.
Unfortunately, these results are not a surprise, with (I think) three of the top four injured (e.g., Hanna Grinaker redshirted and was in poor shape for her when she ran unattached at the Wisconsin Invite). In addition, Cassie Hintz was coming back but she was not at all the same runner (but a very good engineering student) and so that potential top-3 runner did not 'materialize'.
For those two or three Indiana State fanatics having orgasms over ISU's fourth place finish, get a freaking grip. The team ran well (and apparently short-handed), but they also ran out their butts.
Indiana State is a team that can be annually competitive in the weak MoVal, but don't make the mistake of thinking ISU is a program on the rise.
Hahaha. Where'd that come from? Who was going nuts from ISU on here? What a douche. IU blowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwws.

Did somebody not get any orgasms from their team this weekend? i'm sorry man.

Haha...wow someone has sour grapes. ISU hasn't been mentioned in this thread for awhile. Also, your comments are completely absurd.
" Apparently short-handed" well yes... if your 2008 national qualifier and 4time all conference senior runner is injured I would say that's short handed.
" Ran out their buts" is that possible? Were they possessed by the spirt of Larry Bird or something? They ran well because they worked their a$# off all year with the hopes of making it to nationals. They came up a little short, but ending the season ranked 33rd and being the best team in Indiana is a very successful season.

helmer, john mcnichols will kick your ass any day
Look what two weeks can do!
Notre Dame finishes 6th at Big East with 160 points, 52 points behind 5th Place Providence. WINS Great Lakes
Ohio State finishes 8th at the Big Ten meet with 164 points and is second at the Great Lakes to make Nationals.
Michigan State score 188 points to finish 8th at the Big Ten, 97 points behind Ohio State and come back at Regionals to finish 2nd beating Ohio State who also qualifies in third.
Is there a thread strictly bashing the overall weakness of the Great Lakes region for both men and women? Honestly, what has happened over the past few years? Notre Dame, Michigan, MSU, Indiana, Wiscy, even Miami Central and Eastern (and Toledo and Akron's women)???? They all used to be national threats for a top 10 spot. How can Notre Dame's women finish 6th in Big East then win a region? How have they fallen so much? Does anyone have a valid theory on this?
I'm from Ohio, but not a big fan of OSU athletics (severely over-rated). However, I give big props to the women's team for running very well and earning 2nd. They did what they had to do, but does that team qualify ANY other year out of GL? Same with the Big Ten and MSU's men...bizarre how a team can be 8th then get out of a regional. I know Minnesota and other schools travel to a different regional, but you should NEVER be 8th in a conference and second at a district.
Lastly, I'm puzzled by OSU's men. They qualified (not sure who they beat to get an at large) and did so with a bizarre order. If Gary were to write out a list of the top 5 guys he thought would be his scorers at the GL region, he would have likely said...See, Balyo, Olinger, then maybe Roys, Meyer, or Leslie. Not sure he expected Green and Williams to run quite that well at the end of the season. This was their big year - the year the red-shirts came back to do what they're actually doing. But for some reason they've gotten 2nd at Big Tens and qualified to NCAA without being impressive/dominant. I hope their 5th moves up for nats or they'll finish WAY back in the pack.
I don't especially care for OSU athletics either (too many small sports that are way overfunded!) However, I do know a bunch of the runners on their cross country team and I am not sure what you have been watching? Green was 4th in last springs Big 10 steeplechase and ran 8:58 steeple to win the slow heat at Regionals. This fall he was 2nd man at All-Ohio, 4th man at Big 10's. Why would Green being 3rd man be a surprise? Also, Taylor Williams ran as their #1 last year when they redshirted See and Balyo; what's crazy about him being #2?
See has gotten to another level in cross country. Balyo got injured and Rob wanted to make sure he was ready for track.
There are so many other Big 10 and Great Lakes schools that should be criticized and yet OSU men's cross country continues to get bashed? All they have done this fall is finish 2nd at Big 10's and qualified for the NCAA's again under Rob. I know the guys on their team haven't talked about doing much better than that. Also, they do this while bulding a conference-contending track team too!
As for the women, the coach has done an unbelievable job. In 2 years going from 5th at All-Ohio to qualifying for Nationals with an auto is great. Only a fool would try to take credit away from that!
An undercover OSU runner right? The Steeple doesn't mean anything and doesn't relate to cross country what so ever. There are other people in the nation and in the State that are better at the steeple like Aaron Melhorn. Inconsistent is the word that describes Ohio State. They cannot keep a solid top five. It switches every week. That can be good but it can be bad. OSU finishes dead last at nats.
The region is down but I would expect to be back to full strength next year. Notre Dame, Michigan, Michigan State and Wisconsin were all down due to graduation and injuries but have young, talented teams. Ohio State may be a flash in the pan but will still be decent next year but thin and I would not expect them to keep this up very long. Indiana is going to be thin after losing Robinson next year. Toledo looks to be back on the upswing after a few down years as well as they will only lose their #3 runner. I can see a seven team battle in 2010 if Wisconsin can right the ship.
As far as Central, Eastern, Miami and Akron (that were mentioned before) I don't really have a recollection of any of those teams ever being that good at the Region. A better question is what happened to Butler, Ball State and Marquette?
This region is dominated by the Big-10 and Notre Dame. Over the last 10 years the only other schools you regularly see battling for a top-5 spot was Marquette, Butler and Toledo. Only Toledo seems to be still in that mix.
The Great Lakes Region for women has traditionally been one of the strongest and I think you will see this again in the next couple of years as most of these teams are very young.

Dude your a freakin idiot. Just cause ISU knows how to peak and doesnt worry about other meets that dont matter like IU, you get pissed. Your prob a stupid hoosier fan who thinks speed workouts in the summer are the key to a great crosscountry season...
