Deena had a darn fine race! If she is targeting 2012 or 2:18 I would not bet against her! She is a wonderful person. I recently have been coaching one of the top H.S. ladies in the country. This lady has come down with a serious illness. Horrible pain and now possibly it is Cancer. I just shot and email to Deena's site. Never thought I'd hear from her. (This was before this illness was even close to being diagnosed.) Deena responded so fast! She has written the H.S. lady and gave us some ideas, with her husband helping, and even mentioned a possible clinic possibility. She was so wonderful, wrote to us immediately! IMO, this type of pro athlete, or even just an adult that responds like this, to a youth she does not even know......well I don't even have words, what a fine example of a great individual adult. Can one do any better.

- I think Mrs. Kastor's confidence was down & she just wanted to get a decent effort where she finished strong & doesn't feel trashed after the race. Time will tell if this is the confidence booster she'll need to continue on in the marathon.
- If I was Coach Mahon, I"d tell her to focus on leading the US Women toward a great World Cross Country attempt in March & then pop a good 10K in Palo Alto or Mt Sac in early Spring. Take a break, have a baby with Mr. Kastor...then come back for 2012. World X is fun, she's good at that distance & she can probably have a good time getting big for a 10K in early Sprng. Get the confidence & fun going...have a life experience in bringing a Kastor in the world...then watch her come back for 2012 because she wants to come back versus everyone else's expectations.
- Mrs. Kastor's one tough gal that's been at it in a tough sport for a long time. I'd focus on events that build confidence & allow her to have fun by letting it rip (World X, Track, etc). Then balance that w/a life experience of having a baby. She's got plenty of miles behind her that she shouldn't feel she has to make up.

Why has this thread turned into a issue of Denna's character? I never questioned whether or not she is a nice person or willing to pull small puppies out of a burning building. I don't care if she is Mother Theresa. SHE STATED THAT SHE WAS GOING AFTER THE AMERICAN RECORD. That was 100% BS and she knew it. I said that it would be proven that it was all hype. Here we are a day later and I WAS RIGHT.

If you were gonna coach a Ritz, Hall, Haille Geb or Deena what makes them so accomplished. I say what you are getting are people of exemplary character. I said I would not bet against her, no way. Heck I bet if you gave Denna the choice #1 save pups ready to die in a burning building, #2. accomplish anything like Mother Theresa, #3 run 2:19. Denna would pick #1 or #2. Heck I'd like to see her run a marthon where in exactly 2:19 a fire is gonna consume some pups in a burning building, unless she gets there to stop it in 2:19. I'm just saying I don't bet against such people, just me I guess.

How do you know she knew it was all hype. What piece of information do you have, that no one else has access to, that leads you to believe the Deena was knowingly lying when she made that statement? And not meeting her goal doesn't mean she wasn't going for it.

Unless it was a choice between #1 save puppies in a burning building #2 accomplish anything like Mother Theresa or #3 a complimentary romantic getaway to California's wine country for two.

She did not state that her goal was to win. She went out of her way to say that she wanted to run a fast time (2:18). She then proceeded to allow Tera Moody to lead through the first 10k at barely under 6 minute pace. SHE HAD NO INTENTION OF RUNNING FAST. A word about the "afterlife" so to speak, though I am certain this is several chapters ahead of you even now: It is a LOT better than most would imagine and this from a guy who never saw an Olympic medal as you did (and didn't quite get a sub-Radcliffe performance - though I got a personal apology from her for this!). The coffee shop is awaiting and you will always be the Queen of Mammoth Lakes.
