In these meets, when the start is in alleys like that there should be cones all the way around the curve to the break. What goes on in high school in the US has nothing to do with this meet.

The people calling for disqualification for violation of a "rule" that had zero impact on the actual competition are the joke here. They are what people have come to abhor as the anal sticklers who ruin high school competition.

after watching the start several times, here are my thoughts--

Kiplagat (Kenya) was running in the outside of lane 3 from the gun (the alley started in lane 4). By 35-40m, Kiplagat is running in the middle of lane 3. To me, this is completely inexcusable. Then at 50m, Ayelew (Ethiopia) cuts directly across the track from lane 5 or 6 to right next to Kiplagat, who starts gradually moving towards the rail as soon as Ayelew is next to her.

Only 1 runner from the inside group made it out safely before the wall of alley-runners blocked them out (and that 1 realized what was happening and basically sprinted for 5m to beat Kiplagat to the rail). It took 250m for anyone else from the inside to get around the alley runners, which they had to go wide to do. Between 300-400m, there was a ton of shifting as runners from the inside got their first chances to get into their desired positions in the pack. And there was a near-fall ~200m in as the inside-runners tried to get through the wall formed by the alley-runners.

It CLEARLY had an impact on how the first lap of the race played out, and we have no way of knowing whether the way the race played out would have been different if this hadn't happened. Maybe someone on the inside was planning on taking it out really hard but didn't get that opportunity because the runners on the outside cut them off.

Geez you goons, this is like the infamous "race start technique" thread all over again.

A fraction of a second, or even a whole second, in the first lap means NOTHING - ABSOLUTELY ZERO - in the 25th. Period. Maybe even less than nothing, the more tactical is the early pace.

It's mostly all well and good that anyone can post here, and anonymously, but if you've never run a freaking distance race, please consider that your analysis will probably make you look like an ass.

And yes, of course rules should not be ignored. The proper thing would have been to catch it at the time. The officials blew it. It's unfortunate, but it doesn't make our sport a joke. They don't replay the entire Super Bowl or game 7 of the World Series on account of an early blown call, no matter how unanimously everyone agrees it was after the game.

Ok, guess I missed it but I think you're saying then that the outside alley did run less than the inside alley. Just making sure I understand your point.So there's no argument that there is a discrepancy in distances run by the medal winners. We're assuming, since we couldn't quite see from the broadcast, that the officials neglected to place cones along the lane to identify the cut in point for the outside alley. The "realities" of racing show us that this discrepancy in race distance and the officials' lack of attention would not have made a difference in the race outcome. Therefore, the results should remain the same.

I understand your point that a 5 - 6m difference in the length of the race some athletes ran compared to others (and the official distance) probably doesn't materially affect the outcome.

But here's the question for you then:

What, in your opinion, is the distance some should be allowed to cut short before you would start enforcing the rules?

If 5 - 6m is ok, what about 10m? 30m? 100m? Is it ok if some athletes are given a 1 second head start? What about 5 seconds? 20 seconds? Should we look at the finishing results and the pace in the early part of the race to determine whether to enforce the rules?

Just gout out of the press conference. There will be no DQ. The IAAF official said no one filed a protest within 30 minutes so they could not DQ anyone. Then the question was asked what if someone had filed a protest what would have happened. She said that the athletes could not be DQd because the cones were not set up properly. She said all that would happen would be that any national records or PBs set would be thrown out.
