You guys don't realize how hard top triathletes train. I am not even a pro triathlete, and my training is so much harder than when I was running 100mpw. Instead of 2-3 hard workouts, I do 6-8. I think runners just don't realize how hard good triathletes work. I do 3 hard swims, 2 hard bikes, and two hard runs on top of a lot of base training, with a training volume of about 18-22 hours. Mentally it is very taxing. I thought training for running was hard, but this is definitely a whole different level.
Case in point right there...
Gotta brag about how much training you do, and how hard it is.

These are sweet PRs, thanks.

He might be bragging but he's right. The people I know who are triathletes training for long-course stuff have absolutely zero free time. They always have to train. Meanwhile, I can do high mileage running and still go out a few nights a week.
By comparison, we have it easy.

If you bought 7 pairs of shoes, one for each day of the week, and did 100 mile weeks every week for the entire year you would put on about 750miles on each shoe... while this is the top end of what you would idealy put on a shoe it is still possible. Now let's say you paid 100 dollars each for these shoes thats only 700 dollars... compare that to the price of a bike, . . .
Not to further invite a slap fight, but a decent bike lasts a long time and maintenance costs are really pretty low. Amortized over a few years, hour for hour, you can bike cheaper than you can run. That's not to deny the existence of people spending inordinate amounts of money on cycling gear, but you don't have to.
Actually, when I was doing IM races, I did some workouts that I cannot now believe I did. One in particular still amazes me: Lars Jorgenson and I rode 80 miles, taking turns at 10 mile pulls, all at 24 mph. We got off the bike and ran 20 miles on a fire road at 7:00 pace, running the last mile in 5:30. Total time for the workout was about 6:30 or so. (It was in 1996, so it's hard for me to remember.)
Now that I think about this, that was just friggin' stupid training. But damn it was fun.
We did some bike/run bricks that were pretty intense: 10 mile tt at 25 mph followed by 3 miles in 16:30-ish.
For reference, I was a sub-10:00 IM and 1:57 Olympic triathlete and 15:20/32:00 runner. I don't miss that stuff at all.

IOW, you were lousy at IM.
if you think someone is a rich snob because they own a $1500 bike (that is what most of them cost, not $5000) then maybe you should get a better job, but i guess you cant because you run 80 miles a week to finish in the top 10 at the local half marathon or maybe the turkey trot, can we start a boys are better than girls thread next?

absolutely! because it would be great if more of those slow marathoners would just sit on the couch and get fat.
you're hard core man. rad.
Thank you for outing yourself as a major moron. Again, it's not an either/or proposition, but there's no use trying to explain this to some shit-for-brains who only sees the world in terms of polar opposites.

Ok, you need to learn some history. Why do you think they were called forced/DEATH marches? Uh duh, because not everyone could do it and the ones that could not were killed. I guarantee I could easily find people who could not finish the task of 100 miles. Just give me one minute.
Then prove it. Go on, Tommy. I never said that everyone could do it, either, so that's your straw man to molest.
Oh, and I guess you don't run enough. Being smart is changing your shoes enough so you do not get hurt. Or I guess you have a crap load of money, because dropping around 100 bucks for shoes is not cheap for most people.
Guess again, jerkoff. I've not spent $100 for shoes in years, it's not tough at all to get quality shoes for much less, unless you're just a complete shithead. Retail is for suckers, and you're clearly one of them.
Nobody cares, toolbag.

Actually, 9:49 is not that bad. (It was at Lake Placid.) Qualified for Hawaii twice. Couldn't swim worth a damn.
this is exactly my point. I talk about tattoos, stickers and moms, and you give us workouts and aero savings. Get over yourself, obviously top athletes in any sport train hard. You are just another blowhard triasslete. I'm going to enjoy riding buy you on my aluminum bike, since I'm sure you've invested beyond your needs in full carbon frame, wheels, shifters, bottle cages and aerobars.

Mentally it is very taxing. I thought training for running was hard, but this is definitely a whole different level. Now, the races themselves are a little easier, but you have to be mentally aware of what you are doing because there are so many things to remember while you are transitioning. When I was runner, I would have given that training schedule a lot of respect. Now, you get more than your fair share of tools in triathlon, more so than in running. However, don't group me or other serious triathletes with those people. We probably like them less than you do because they give us a bad name, and we have to see them strutting around at races. Also, no one on here understands aerodynamics. A road bike to tri bike frame with aerobars will give you 3 minutes in a 40k. A aero helmet will give you another 45 seconds. Racing wheels another 1-2 minutes. A skinsuit versus loose clothing is 1-2 minutes Hell, even shaving your legs gives you 20 seconds. If you could cut 6-7 minutes off your half marathon time without any training, you know you would spend whatever money you had. Runners are just as obsessed as triathletes, its just that gear does not help them as much.

Yes you basically said everyone can run/walk 100 miles. You said my cousin could run/walk 100 miles. No he cannot. So again, you are incorrect. Just proved it. Sorry to burst your bubble again. Try not to weasel your way out of that one. And I guess you are calling basically everyone a sucker for buying regular shoes. Oh, and I do not molest things as you stated. Incorrect again OK (seeing how we are now on a first name basis). Please halt the name-calling. It tires me and the rest of the people reading this.
An open letter to "letsrun (or letswhine) runners"
I am a Triathlete and I am in love with myself because I am vastly better than 97.3% of you....
Yes it’s true.... I am smarter and more driven than you. My huge disposable income has allowed me to amass a bike and wetsuit collection worth more than your house.
I am in better overall physical condition much better looking than you and as a result pick up way more than you.
I have my Mdot tattoo waxed bi-weekly.
You may think that I strut around pre race basking in my own near blinding awesomeness, sneering at the lesser creatures that bleat about their petty endeavours as they scurry about. You are wrong I really don’t even notice you.
Don’t hate me for your own self loathing and lack of individual fulfilment. I can’t help it that because of the sport I have chosen to practice I am so much better than you.... I should not have to stay indoors just so you can feel less miserable about your pointless existence.
Don’t judge me because running on its own is a sport of poverty and boredom that lacks any style, flair or character at all but the international elite level.
I am in love with myself because I am a contented narcissist who is extremely awesome. (The unawesome will never understand).... My life is really really good.
Why not feel happy for me? I do……
You're going to have to do better than that, Tommy. Hearsay isn't proof. Being in the majority doesn't mean you're smart, it usually means you're a good follower.
Cut it out, OK. You are being a douche now. Are you a triathlete or what?
I to am a triathlete. And we are awesome. In fact we are so awesome that we have to send some of our under performing athletes to go and dominate other sports, like Buster Mottram and Lance Armstrong.
Also fluro shorts are no longer cool, and no chicks like skinny little white folk.....
Are you in 9th grade or 10th?
