Kendra should move to Victoria, and get the right Coach, and fun fast :)

hmmm...interesting, I really wonder how this is going to pan out. Seems like Kendra wants to leave, but Metcalfe is trying to convince her to stay?? I like how he states that he doesn't know why she would want to leave...did he actually ask her when they sat down to talk? That or he didn't like her answer.
Jeez Ron, the girl needs help with her health if you couldnt' tell! The last thing she needs is a bunch of coaches convincing her that she is healthy enough to train right now and to come here or there.

So he sat down, she talked about wanting to leave, but Metcalf still doesn't know why she would want to leave. Typical GM BS smokescreen.
She'll be gone next fall.
Metcalf just needs to look in the mirror to know why she wants to leave.

She is going to UNC....I'm calling it...regional chatter
Yes, I agree totally...
1) Health
2) Fitness
3) Racing...
Nothing has changed, except when Coaches and Athletes get caught up in short-term goals, and lose sight of the big picture... It happens much too often for my liking...
RSB,
Health, Fitness and Racing. I would agree with this order of priority. Where do you think Kendra should go next year?
1.)Home
2.)High Performance Center in Canada
3.)Canadian University-If so, where?
4.)USA University-If so, where?
Ron;
Should not her number one priority by Health? And there should be no second priority until that is taken care of?
Things like running fast, coaching, etc should not even be thought about until she gets her health in line. Coaches are so concerned about her getting the right coaching and running fast, when that should not even be a factor until her health situation is stable.
So what if she's staying at UW, even if she really is? The bottom line, and the answer to the OP's question, is "NO." Schaaf has NOT run outdoor track for any U.S. college.
I heard that in the spring of 2009 she was away from Seattle, doing some work with her Canadian club coach. While the outdoor NCAA was being held, she was running a 1500 in Victoria, B.C.
Not much of a Husky. Wonder what a XC-only scholarship is worth . . .
Yes, that's exactly right, as I noted in my earlier list of priorities...
Sorry I didn't make that clear enough...
Kendra should move to Victoria or Cowichan Bay, B.C.
She should do some of the "eat/drink/be merry" philosophy for a while, while running easily, and rebuilding her potentially fantastic running career.
She could either run for the University or not. Or she could attend Camosun or Malaspina, both excellent 4-year colleges, with an increasing number of academic options.
I would coach her, and we would have a lot of success...
*** Other women that I have coached during my career have run: (rounded off)...
800 m. - 2:01/2:01/2:03/2:03/2:04/2:05, and about another dozen women who ran sub 2:10...
1500 m. - 4:05/4:06/4:07/4:11/4:12/4:16/4:17/4:18/4:19 and about another dozen women who ran sub 4:30...
3000 m. - 8:43/8:43/8:55/9:04(indoors)/9:08, and about another dozen women who ran sub 9:30...
5000 m. - most of my coaching career, the Women ran 3000 metres, not 5000 metres, so some of the best gals I coached seldom or never ran a 5000 metres on the track...
Robyn Meagher ran 15:21, and Debbie Scott ran, in flats in a charity run in December, 15:38.
5000 m. Cross-Country - Debbie finished 8th/11th and 13th in 3 of her 5 trips to the World Cross-Country...
Robyn Meagher, Ulla Marquette, Brenda Shackleton, Lucy Smith, Tania Jones, Cathy Dargie, Karen Rainey, Cindy O'Krane, Anna Gunasekera, Shannon Bowles, Barbora Brych, Stephanie Mills, and several others were National level Cross-Country runners, among the best in Canada in either University or National Championships, and many represented Canada Internationally in Cross Country...
10000 m. I didn't have many athletes who were long distance runners on the track. The best were Lucy Smith and Ulla Marquette who both ran 32 something.
10000 m. Roads - Between Ulla and Lucy, they won the National 10K Championships about 6 years in a row.
When Debbie did run a Road 10K., she was virtually unbeatable. We usually did them just as hard training runs. She won the Sun Run in 33:03, and usually ran in the low to mid 33 minute range during these "hard training runs"...
So Kendra, so Steve....The offer is out there. I can get room and board support for Kendra if she races for the Prairie Inn Harriers Running Club in Victoria, and I will personally supervise her training, and could work well with Jon Brown and perhaps Lucy Smith to give Kendra the best possible chance of long-term success...
After reading both Merca's blog and Metcalf's response, I'd put my money on Merca being right. My guess is Metcalf is trying to talk (pleading?) Kendra in to staying. As a friend put it, Merca wears Husky underwear, he's such a UW supporter. For him to write something like that, he has to have solid information. Add Mel Lawrence, who tried to leave last year, and the number of girls sidelined with injury this spring, and you have to conclude the loss of Kelly Strong is really being felt.
If I was one of the HS girls who committed to the UW for this fall, I'd be concerned, and asking some serious questions about what is going on at the UW.

That'd be a perfect fit for her. They are breeding foreign "skinny" chicks there. Should be a good choice considering how poor the coaching is there.
Mel Lawrence tried to leave? Why, and to go where?
Not only did they lose kelly strong but they also lose senior leader katie follett too. Both seemed like positive examples for some of the younger ones to look up to.
Please!! rsb, not do doubt your coaching talents but if you have to resort to a lets run message board to recruit someone, well, enough said! ( you don't see Schumacher on here saying,.hey, I coach Simon Bariu, the fastest Canadian ever, come train with me, I will give you free room and board)
Yeah, back in Canada she could try the Beer Mile!
http://www.beermile.com/records/ref_sex/g_F
Top 2 all-time women's performers and top 4 performances in Canada.
Semi-official men's WR set in Victoria.
Take off, hoser!
Ron;
After being 'called out' you say her number one priority should be to get healthy, with no #2 until that is taken care of.
Then you send this long e mail explaining what a great coach you are with all the great people you have coached and Kendra should move to your back yard.
Her health issues? You just say she should eat/drink/be merry. That should solve it right? No big deal. Well, My wife is an MD and she had dealt with women with eating disorders. It might not be as simple as eat/drink/ and be merry to fix. It can be life threatening. Is running fast more important than long term health issues? I admire a coach like Peter Tegen, who was not afraid to put a woman's health ahead of her running potential and has proven it on numerous occasions.
In your post, your 'single mindedness' is shining through bright and clear. Let her get healthy before you throw her in with Lucy etc.
Ps. Why would a coach with your background not have an established group that you work with or coach at a university? Your resume says you are retired. Why encourage an athlete to transfer on a message board? Why don't you at least have the courtesy to call Coach Metcalf if you want to 'poach' his athlete. I am sure you would want the same courtesy from other coaches concerning athletes you coach...
