Rupp's celebration? Waving to his adoring home crowd? Man people love to player hate. You are all either 90 year old Catholics who feel anything out of line sends one to hell or are just talking to the sake of talking. That celebration by Jimmy was awesome, he walked all over those kids! Do what you want. And bowing after they booed was GREAT! And Rupp is a freaking awesome runner, it's sad that now that he is consistently killing it you guys are running of out reasons to hate on him. Assholes.

4. Principles of Conduct (Committee on Administration; spring 1997)

a. Expectation of Good Sportsmanship in Ivy League Athletics

(1) The Council of Presidents has traditionally relied on the Committee on Administration to define appropriate standards of good sportsmanship in the conduct of Ivy League athletes, and that Committee has rightfully expected that the primary responsibility for assuring good sportsmanship among both participants and spectators should be and is assumed by the individual institutions.

(2) The Committee now believes that it is important to support institutions and coaches in this effort by stating explicitly that it expects good sportsmanship to be practiced by Ivy League administrators, staff, coaches, athletes and spectators.

(3) The Committee hopes and expects that it can avoid the need for detailed substantive or procedural rules, and that it can continue to rely on the holding by all Ivy institutions of a mutual sense of appropriate conduct, and on the taking by all Ivy institutions of appropriate actions to teach and secure such conduct.

b. Expectations for the conduct of Ivy League athletics

(1) Ivy League institutional administrators and representatives, athletic staff members, coaches and athletes are expected to abide by standards of good sportsmanship in connection with any athletic activities involving their institutions, and are expected not to commit, nor to lead others to commit, any act of verbal or physical abuse in connection with any such activities.

(2) This expectation includes both pre-and post-contest activities, and particularly includes activities relating to spectators and to officials.

(3) Each Ivy League institution should make this expectation clearly known, at the beginning of each year or season as appropriate, to its administrators, athletic staff members, coaches and athletes.

(4) The following statement shall be made or distributed publicly before the beginning of every intercollegiate varsity or junior varsity athletic contest held at an Ivy League institution (e.g., through a public address system, or by inclusion in a game program):

"Ladies and gentlemen, [Host Institution] and the Ivy League welcome you to today's contest. We ask that you join us and today's coaches, players and officials in practicing good sportsmanship in supporting your teams and in your conduct toward players, coaches,officials and other spectators. [Please note that the possession and consumption of alcoholic beverages also are prohibited.]"

Home institutions may add to this statement as they deem appropriate. Decisions about facility control, and regulation and removal of spectators, are within the purview of the home institution.

Comparing what Wyner did to what Rupp does/did in races is disingenuous at best. No one without an agenda here would watch the Wyner video and equate that to what Rupp does.

Ok. Let's be honest here. Jimmy may have been a total prick but this whole DQ is insane.

Wyner's DQ was built up frustration from Princeton and the whole league spilling over after 7 years of domination by the Big Red. Plain and simple.

In all sports and walks of life, dynasties are always loved by their supporters and hated by everyone else. Whether it's the Yankees or Cowboys in the sports world or the USA in the real world - no one likes the big bully who is the best. Success breeds resentment.

Wyner's action were viewed as a big negative by the crowd simply because he goes to Cornell.

Liam Boylan Pett of Columbia who was celebrated on the cover of the Penn Relays for Christ's sake for similar celebrations.

Don't tell me that LBP didn't do what Wyner did. At Penn Relays, he probably didn't have big enough of a lead to go crazy before the finish line but he 100% did exactly what Wyner did as last year's indoor Heps. Look at this photo:

Now why did no one even raise an eyebrow about LBP? Because LBP goes to lovable lowly Columbia who is lacking in terms of being a complete track and field program (pretty darn good in the mid-d though) and everyone loves the underdog.

Samara didn't care about LBP as LBP beating Miller helped him.

A guy from Cornell does it and the whole league goes crazy.

Where's the consistency? There is none.

PS. If you are going to enforce the 'sportsmanship rule', then both Maag and Robbins should have been DQ'd as their supporters booed. According to Ivy rules, the winner of the mile is Merber.

PPS. Jeff Randall, congrats on your win in the steeple. You deserved to be a Heps champ just like Jimmy Wyner. It was long over due, but please get off the high horse talking about this matter on flotrack unless you tried to get LBP DQd last year.

This is one of the most absurd DQed I have ever seen and I hsve seen some stupid ones.

What Jimmy did was show some attitude- the same attitude that allows him to win these races. Say what you want about class, but in an individual sport like track the goal is to win. And regardless of DQs, everyone knows who won that race...WYNER

All of you young Ivy League guys who think you are so smart and moral and want Wyner Dq'd, all I can say is learn a little bit of history.

Ireland's Eamonn Coghlann won the inaugural 5k at the 1983 world champs. In this race, on the final bend, he turned, stared at his competitor and pumped his fist several times BEFORE passing him.

Wyner at least waited until he was in the lead.

Coghlann is a bit better of an interview, but the guy did way, way more at the world champs and nothing happened. He was a national hero.

I think the bow was what got him DQed, and the little high step march at the end. Who knows if the bow was meant towards the fans or the other competitors. Boylan- Pett celebrated his school more, I would have taken it as taunting if I were in Wyners race.

What this tells me if that there is more than one dickhead in the Ivy League who needs to grow the fock up and learn to win with graciousness. Where are the coaches in these guys lives? I managed to run in three state hs championships, two NCAA DI's and two Olympic Trials without ever seeing a competitor pull such a dickhead move, and if I had done so, at any level, any of my coaches would have grabbed me by the ear and given me a good dressing down for bringing such shame on myself, my teammates and school. But hey, I'm old school.

At the race, I said this and after watching the video I say it even more. I don't think Jimmy should have been DQd. He crossed the finish line first, he didn't impede anyone.

As someone said, when did making an ass out of yourself become grounds for DQ. I've never heard of this being done in the history of the sport as long as I can remember. Someone else can remind me if it has ever happened.

Watching it on video was less much shocking than seeing it in person. He had just pulled in front, and I was thinking "ok Jimmy don't go too soon, you've got to make it all the way to the line." And right then boom, his hand went up. I was shocked. Some more celebration and then like 20 meters of running to the line with boos coming down from the crowd. I guess he knew he had it won. It was embarrassing the whole scene and the boos made it worse. I was a bit reluctant to look over a Jimmy and right when I did, the bow to the boos.

I know Jimmy has learned from this. I'm all for celebrating but he has to be mindful of his fellow competitors and how others will receive him. The League doesn't like him or Cornell to begin with and that factors into the equation.

Having said that I don't think a DQ is the way to go. Kick him out of the meet or something but he won the race fair and square. I think the people saying he impeded a Dartmouth runner must be joking. But maybe not. People are pretty heated at the Heps. When he was DQd people rose and gave a standing ovation. I think taking pleasure in another man's downfall is pretty classless as well. Not saying 2 wrongs make a right but that the Heps is like no other meet.

The entire Dartmouth squad should have been DQ'd for their reprehensible behavior.
