The Orioles quite possibly have the worst bullpen in the history of baseball. Most AAA teams have a better pen than that. Once a team gets to the O's pen, hitters can't get to the plate fast enough. It's literally batting practice.
I feel bad for guys like Roberts, Markakis, Huff, and Jones. They are all excellent players who could easily be playing for a contender. But they have to know they have absolutely no chance with that pitching staff. No chance.
And its only going to get worse. For now, the 'pen can only blame itself for its deficiencies. However, eventually the 'pen will get worn down from several months of getting called into action in the 3rd inning every other night. At least in football or basketball the clock will give you some mercy and you can just fold your tent and wait for the next game if things get out of control. Not so in baseball, as the game can't end until you get guys out, and if you have to go thru 3-4 pitchers from the 'pen just to finish a game that you have no chance to win anyway, you end up wasting arms that could maybe help you in a future game that you might actually have a chance to win. The O's of the past few years have this routine down to a science and it looks like this year could be more of the same.
On the bright side, they do have the offensive ability to win their share of 12-9 games, ane once every five days Guthrie might give them a chance to get to Ray and Sherrill (I'm assuming Ray will bounce back to be an effective setup guy this year).
