Evans and Silva both actually weigh around 215 when they don't cut weight, so they are equal in that aspect. Silva's advantage is that he has about 4 inches reach on Rashad, which only adds to his killer stand-up. Dana White's goal was to have the Chuck vs. Forrest fight in December to make a lot of $ on PPV buys. Chuck has always eaten grapplers with marginal stand-up for lunch (Tito, Randy, Babalu, etc), so he was given Evans as an "easy" fight. Looks like it didn't turn out so easy. For all the naysayers, if MMA was fake and planned, Evans would have lost to Chuck via a highlight reel knockout to set up a huge PPV showdown with Forrest. Now Dana White is going to make a lot less money on the Rashad vs. Forrest fight. (I personally feel Lyoto Machida has earned the shot, but he's not as marketable in fighting Forrest.) I always feel like I gang up on you in MMA talk Alan, but it's all in good fun and I've always enjoyed your posts, especially running related.

After reading through some of the answers and discussions on the original question, i think some may have gotten themselves off track.
As a former marine with the 1st recon out of the stumps (29 palms) I can shed a little light on the subject.
I'm not going to automatically say "OORAH, USMC we would kill em all". Sorry to disappoint. Every combative situation is different, and it comes down to the will to save your own life and/or the lives of your fellow marines/s.e.a.l's.
There was a comment that a seal would have the advantage in the water. Recon is an amphibious unit, just as seals are. The S.E.A.L's were actually brought about by being modeled after recon marine units. We're brothers, we're professionals in the art of subterfuge, recon, extraction, and terrorist neutralization. In essence, trained to kill in the quietest, most elusive ways possible.
Some are assuming, in fact that seals and recon marines are trained solely in the Krav defense system. Not true. Marines are trained early in their tenure with "MCMAP" techniques, which are derived from various styles of H2HC. Not only that but, spending time in combat situations, with service men from other areas of the world, we pcick up new techniques through continued training, with fighting men, from Australia, Great Britain, "ROK" soldiers from the Korean army. (Bad S.O.B.'s).
To begin to try to compare this type of training to an MMA fighter, who is trained in a gym, and chances are, never has to worry about fighting any other time, than in a gym or cage, is ludicrous. MMA fighters may have the advantage in a controlled environment, with breaks between rounds, and rules to fight by, but, that wasn't the original question. Hand to hand, life or death, you probably should stay in the cage, and let the ref stop it when it gets that far.

The truth is that it is more about the person than who they represent (UFC, Marine, Seal). A few UFC guys have killed in street fights and most Marines and Seals will never be in a fight to the death. I would rather see a psychological profile in choosing a winner than who they were taught to fight by. I'll take the sociopath over the guy with a conscience.
The only test are in fights to the death. Coaches, rings, judges are there for play acting and staged Hollywood bouts. Military training stunts shown for TV are just that, stunts, not real fights. Man for man Hezbollah has the toughest fighters in the world and proved it by defeating Israel in 2006. For you KKK, NEOCON, Nazi, White Supremecist types out there, you can be proud that Hezbollah are white boys, Persians from Iran and Syria.
The MMA guy may have lots of holds, kicks, etc, but I think in the end the marine/seal will have been trained to fight in order to inflict as much damage as possible. They will use the butt of their palm instead of a fist, claw out eyes, bite and just generally fight dirtier than the mma guy has ever had to face. The MMA guys know how to put on a show, the military guys know how to win a fight.
It's pretty funny to think that a MMA fighter would stick to rules in the street. And hitting someone with the palm of your hand.... come on man. In Pankration fights, you have to use the butt of your hand instead of a closed fist because it's less damaging. In the early UFC's the only rule was that you couldn't bite. Well, technically you could, but you wouldn't get penalized for it, you would just have to pay your opponent $1000. Hair-Pulling, face stomping, etc, were all legal. There were also no rounds, and it was a fight until either a KO or the corner threw in the towel. Royce Gracie, a 160 lb. fighter, who was actually the weakest of the Gracies, dominated the competition. Chuck Liddell, before he was a fighter was a bouncer, and he talks about how one night, he knocked out four Navy Seals in a bar fight. In the real world, so many things come into effect: who has friends, who lands the first strikes, the weapons around you, even clothes (this would really help a judo guy toss you on your head) but I would rather be someone who trains 6-8 hours a day in fighting rather than someone who trains for a couple hours a day in boot camp. The whole "fight to the death" thing is pretty funny as well. You can't say you've fought to the death until you truly have. That's like saying if a military guy got into a situation in which he had to escape by running away would have a better chance to escape than Usain Bolt or Bekele, because there's no track spikes or lanes in the street. My MMA gym has a guy who is a former Navy Seal and is a very lean 200 lbs., but he gets tied in knots by a 150 lb. guy. I bet that Navy Seal is glad he is allowed to tap out in the gym, because in the street, he would have several snapped limbs and get choked unconscious.
I guess my question is this.
If Navy Seals are these unstoppable fighting machines that would beat the elite MMA fighters of the world at their own sport, why aren't they mopping up in MMA making millions of dollars? Surely a few of them would have made the jump by now.
This isn't meant to discredit Navy Seals - they are elite at what they do.
