You people calling out Gerry's plan help prove the difference between elite runners and those who sit at home. You are way too rational, too mathematical to ever compete with "seemingly" more successful runners.
"Oh, he's too fast, I'll never beat him."
"How can I beat the world record holder?"
"If I go out hard, he'll just catch me and beat me."
If you talk like that, of course it will happen.
What makes a great athlete is trusting your personal training and strategy, KNOWING you can beat ANYONE if they're willing to toe the line with you.
Best example: Billy Mills.
Here's a cliched but true statement: "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take." All Gerry is saying is put in the training that will get you close to Bekele. Obviously this isn't advice your typical runner, or even for a 14min 5k runner. Train your ass off, get down in the low 13s at the least. Train with those 65-55-65 intervals so when it comes to racing Bekele, you can through down a 55 early in the race and KNOW you can hold down the fort. You aren't blindly sprinting a lap, it's all planned. It's your strategy. YOUR Magic. If you sit back and let Bekele use HIS magic, he'll beat you 100% of the time. If you run your own race, you're taking the chance, the possibility that you can beat him. You may only beat him that way 1 in every 50 times, but maybe that one time will be when it really matters. Trust your training. Trust your plan.
Just go for it.
