Top 10 really means nothing, the top 3 get medals and they are the only ones who will be remembered. In the future when people look back at this marathon they will remember Wanjiru gunning it from the gun, Gharib falling off pace severaql times and fighting his way back and Merga giving it everything he had and having to jog the last lap and concede the bronze to Kebede. They won't remember Ritz running a smart race to finish 9th or Hall hanging back to finish 10th...or sell hitting the wall.
I think this kind of "it's good enough" thinking is bad for American distance running. Unless we set our sights higher we are never going to catch or compete with the Kenyans. I love Hall and I think he has what it takes to compete. I also love the fact that he recognizes his weaknesses....he said after the marathon that he needs to take a break and address some things if he is ever going to compete with the Africans.
One last rant- The Africans use team tactics....why don't we? Ritz and Hall both ran conservatively and ALONE for the entire race yet they were only ~30 seconds apart. Why wouldn't they run together, surely this would have made pushing easier and benefited both of them, maybe even given one a chance at getting close to the bronze medal.
