chicago marathon -- hansons times anomalies (sell & rosario)

No chip timing at the California International Marathon where Miles and Miles ran his 2:22:03

look at these pictures of edward callinan -- his official gun time is 2:22:05. the pictures show his time as 2:22:04 when he is crossing the first mat. i haven't seen his time revised downward -- only two of the hansons' athletes who were one second off each getting two seconds each (for good measure). these guys cover about 10 yards in 2 seconds.

one other thing to consider -- i believe that marathon courses are actually longer than 26 miles, 385 yards in order to get certified. there is a percentage cushion, which probably amounts to several seconds for a marathon distance. i've never seen anyone run a 1500 meters that is actually 1502 meters.

From the Hanson's site:

Two Distance Project members, Sell and Rosario, certainly know all about those standards. Sell's finishing time according to the clock was 2:20:01, but his chip time was 2:19:57. The chip time records a runner's time from when they actually cross the start mat which can take anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes in a race of 40,000 people. Rosario had an even bigger scare as his clock time read 2:22:01 while his chip time was 2:21:58.

Well since the USATF DOESN'T use chip times this should show that neither made it. Whoops but Chicago decided to change their times a month later. Well neither are listed as making it on the USATF site, hope it stays that way. Why let one Hansons in if they are going to hold everyone else out?

I agree that both of them should run. I also feel that they should protest for an entry waiver. It doesn't hurt anything to have a few more on the starting line of a marathon. However, they did not cover 26.2 miles in under 2:22 either chip or gun. Ben did.

Did you read the post above? Neither of these guys were cheated by the gun time vs chip time rule.

mcpuddlemaker earlier asked what good it would do for the sport to hold these guys out. well i think it won't do any good OR bad either way for the sport. ben rosario and miles and miles are 2 guys at the back of the pack/standard. the sport doesn't depend on one or two extra runners for anything. so i say follow the rule. if you don't like it, change the rule ahead of time. not really a bad rule until it affects you, right? when 99% of marathons don't use chip timing (including that which miles and miles ran), then you can't use it, this is not a new thing, it's always been that way. tergat's WR, kk's AR, paula's time, deana drossin's time, p diddy's time- all gun times.

It doesn't matter since the USATF doesn't use chip times. But there have been others. I know of a woman that they didn't let in and had a qualifying chip time.

Indeed, you are confused. Read carefully:

If there was an appeal proces, and Rosario got in via that appeal process because he ran 2:21:59 based on his chip time, fine.

That's not why he got in, and that's the problem. He got in because his official gun time was adjusted downward by 2 seconds. Do you think adjusting an official time after the fact is fair? I don't. I doubt many do.

I do believe, however, that if the USATF listened to Rosario's "chip time versus gun time" argument, and allowed him entrance into the trials, that would be fine. That's their call. They make the rules -- not the organizers of the Chicago Marathon.

I'm talking about the even application of a standard, or at least the even application of some appeal process that's available to all.

yes, but if there is a rule already there needs to be a cutoff somewhere. where does it end? if they are giving seconds away, why stop with rosario?
