The point is 15 second improvement over 2 years.
I would suggest that there are not many people out there who went from 4:20 in HS to 3:41.07 or faster 1,500m in College

You could see Byers was dead after he crosseed the finish line, but he stepped it up to take a victory lap. Wonder what Ovett was thinking as he realized on the final stretch he was not going to catch him, but wa still trying to...The other days i was with some kids at an easy race for them, and i was sort of moved by one young athlete saying how she really enjoyed the race because she finally found out what it was like to break the tape!Thanks again for the link. Not heroic stuff. But somewhat moving. And great to hear commentary like "the crowd brought him home" and "the pacemakers are going out on their own..."They were competitors.

Thanks for your story. I was a little earlier in the Southern California days and the training had not yet gotten crazy, but had gotten good enough that for those of us who did training that guys used to do we had trouble making a varsity team.

tommy got arthur lydiard's small booklet on running after high school... the one advocating 12 miles runs etc each morning...half the book was highlighted with a yellow marker and tommy lived it like a bible....that is how he got good fast....HARD WORK!

That HARD WORK was assisted by some excellent running form. Tommy Byers didn't have great college results tho....relatively speaking.
