I agree with you that that type of 400 speed (sub-46) and the 4-5 second endurance cannot coexist. Even crazier is when this formula is applied to women later in the article, he theorizes that the women's WR would be 1:43.98.
All that being said, he is still one of my favorite coaches. A lot of his theories are more cool, "sci-fi" type what-ifs, but some of it works.

anyway on to the original question, i think the best record is sergei Bubka's pole vault record of 6.14(6.15i). no one has ever got near to what he could jump as a 6metre jump is still rare

All those work quite well for sprinters, who continue to perform at levels at or above the rather open days of the 80s. Shot putters simply are not. It can't possibly be a lack of talented athletes or poor coaching that is responsible for some pro events being won with throws of less than 70'.the real reality is fun wrote:

with talent like this, i'm surprised that tim has not broken the 12 second barrier yet, although it suggests that wariner may not be such a dead cert for victory in the 400m if tim can use some of that youthful speed to his advantage in the 400m in beijing. i am now waiting in eager anticipation of a great british victory

Is that Maryland hurdle record owned by "Skeets" by any chance? Has to be. Not many 13 flat dudes out there. He's put that one way out of reach I think.
Those GBTC records are great examples too. Imagine running 2:09 or 28:04 nowadays and not having a shoe contract. It was whole different game back then.

Lake Tahoe Relays as an unbreakable record. 6:16 (Run by the Stereoscope Loafers)
(5:12/mile at altitude up and down monster hills with some legs climbing over 1000ft)
It would take 7 top runners (like Hall, Meb, Ritz, Bauhs, Sell, Abdi, McDougal) to break this record and since professional runners only consider doing races with big payouts I don't think there will ever be such a team.
Fastest time in the last 22 years is 6:50 (which equals not close)

as of right now, no one would be close to touching the world mile record. kaki and rudisha can get closer to grazing the 800m wr than anyone in the world could get to the mile world record.
100m wr gets broken almost as often as the 10k. kinda strange, huh? too bad no one will be in the right kind of shape later this summer to run a blistering 10k, unless samuel wanjiru decides to try something brash, but it wouldn't happen at the olympics anyway.
mind you, i'm considering the athletes out there right now, and what would be more likely to be broken sometime in the near future. i think the 100m wr would be the most likeliest of track events non hurdling that would be broken in the near future, consider it was recently broken and has been happening more frequently, steroids or no steroids.
there's no one on the planet who could run 3:43.13 or faster this summer unless Webb, Lagat, Ramzi, Komen, or some other recent world top miler pulled a complete nugget of gold out of his a$$. Kaki is closer to the 800m wr than anyone is to the 1500m or mile wr.
