That is what you do IF you were interested in racing to best of your ability. Not taking off into a head wind by yourself when you know full well you're not capable of maintaining it.

There is a big difference between having guts and being an idiot. His race at the trials was an example of the latter.

He does his own thing...This bothers a lot of people (not just with resepct to running).

As you get older (like me) you learn that doing it your way is what makes the whole activity enjoyable.

MW has family and friends - they can get great video of him leading the OTs for 20-25% of the race...thats awesome. The OTs CLEARLY were not his priority race (he ran 7 minutes faster the next week).

a lot of people are jealous that he can qualify as an after-thought, and still focus on other things like the JFK 50 etc.

I don't really disagree here....... but it just shows how messed up his priorities can be. He's a really strong runner and one of the few that can make the trials, and he treats it like it's just another marathon that comes around every week instead of every four years.

Ummmmmm...... he ran a PR by a couple minutes and qualified by like 23 seconds - that's no after thought.

I live/run in the DC area and am exposed to all the coverage he gets - he's all about the "wow" factor. It's really not that complicated:

OPTION A-> Run/win 15-25 marathons per year around 2:25-2:35, be highly regarded by the general public as the "working man that could go to the olympics" (even though he never stands a chance), pick up some prize money, be on the news, etc.

OPTION B-> Train just as hard and smart and run 2-3 marathons/year around 2:17ish?, be highly regarded by the running community as a true elite marathoner, toss the general attention into the wind.

Obviously he chooses option A - I guess we're all different that way, but there's no question to why he does it all - attention.

But it does get quite annoying when everybody in the area thinks a 2:25 guy is a running god.

I'm up there in the DC area also. I don't see him being splashed all over the place, more than any of the other fine runners that are up here. There weren't that many OT qualifiers up here and they all got about the same press for that race. Now if MW runs more races than the others, then he gets more ink. If he wins that race do you want it not to be reported because it's him running the race, as opposed to say Chris Banks. He actually does work another job and has a family. So would training harder for one or two races that supposedly would be bigger and faster and less likely of him winning any money help him more than running multiple B level races and taking home cash from most of them?

I hope he does well at the 100k championships and gets on the US world 100k team. Same with Serge Arbonis and any of the other local ultra guys running the race.

I feel sorry for you. You are a very bitter person. You are also a very jealous person. The sooner you realize that MW has no effect whatsoever on your ability to enjoy your training and racing, the sooner you will be a happier, more enjoyable person to be around.

The biggest reason that most people don't like hanging around runner is because of jack@sses like you. Maybe if you spent more time enjoying your own life you wouldn't have to spend so much time telling other people how to live theirs. Grow up.

I don't think he's running 15-25 marathons a year.

That would be 1-2 a month. Aside from his back to back marathons I don't think he's run all that many this year.

Hold on here - you are putting words in my mouth. You've taken my opinions (which I'm entitled to) and made really personal assumptions about me which you have no clue about. I'm not jealous, I know MW has no effect on ANYTHING I do, and I don't expect anything to change at all!!!

I simply stated the fact that he's chosen option A; I even stated that we're all different that way. I also said it's annoying when a 2:25:00 guy is regarded as a running god. I just expressed it's annoying - not that I'm super pissed or that we need to change this right away or that I'm depressed and not happy because of this. I'm not even annoyed by MW - he does what he does, and he's doing a great job - his work ethic is amazing!

At the very least if he brings more attention to the sport, then more power to him.

I never told anybody how to live their life, I simply stated MW chose option A. I never even said that option B is better than option A or anything like that.

Don't take everything so personal, especially when my statements aren't even personal to begin with.

I enjoy my life plenty and will honestly never loose a second of sleep with who's on the news or who ran what time or how many marathons or footraces anybody runs. I simply participated in the DISCUSSION on the..... get this..... DISCUSSION BOARD with my opinion.

Do you not grok the dichotomy in your two statements? I\'d rather have runners looking up to MW than Karnazes or the Penguin! He has said he has no chance of qualifying, so like everybody else save 7-10 athletes, the OTs are just another race.

Off the Grid - your original post regarding priorites references his RACE priorities, not family and work. My comment regarding his mixed up priorities refers to not having the OTs as a priority comparred to other races, not comparredto family and work - he seems like a really great family man and working man - really down to earth.
