In '84 when the qualifying list was far and away the best we ever had the winner ran 2:11:40 and it took 2:11:45 to make the team. 18th place was 2:18:10, I couldn't find full results. the course was faster but it was warm and they had a head wind so we'll say for argument sake that the times were equal.

In the top 10 in 88 on a very comparable course 1. conover, 2:12:26, 2. eyestone 2:12:49, 3. Pfitzinger 2:13:29, 4. gompers, 2:14:20, 5. Curp, 2:14:40, 6. Norman, 2:15:49, 7. Hodge 2:16:56, 8. Meyer, 2:17:40, 9. Spence, 2:17:49, 10. willis, 2:17:52

compare that to this year and now looks very favorably for now. Interestingly 88 7th placer hodge and this years 7th placer jenkins both graduated from the same college.

Now back to 80 the top 3 ran between 2:10:19 and 2:10:40 on the very fast flat point to point buffalo course but in good weather. this was a much faster course then what they had this year in nyc. Yes the qualifying lists in the early 80's were much better but I think that we are seeing a steady movement of todays runners towards that level. And things are much better then they were in the years in between. 4 years ago sell got 10th in 2:17:10 on a super flat fast course in alabama, this year that would have barely been in the top 20 and the course was 2 minutes slower give or take. the 96 course was comparable to this years and 2:12 was enough to win, I think 2:13 very low made the team. thats with a very similar race as well. there were some top notch guys in that race but really only kemp was at the top of his game. Pittsburg's weather made it a very comparable course and the winner only ran 2:14.

Are we ready to take on kenya no. Are we as deep as in 84 , no but are we getting there, absolutely.

Seriously, people need to stop asking these stupid questions. The poster made a general observation on the state of American distance running. It is COMPLETELY irrelevant if he ran a 2:05 marathon or a 5:05. This is what fans do, they talk about the sport and they analyze.

If the poster commented that Pedro Martinez's fastball is fading, would it matter how fast he throws himself? If he said that the talent level is better in the NFL vs. 20 years ago, would it matter if he was a professional football player?

If we compare the US population + the huge size of the running movement with the actual results, we are still very far from smaller "white" countries that anyway perform better (Spain, Germany, Italy, Australia, etc)

I've thought about this, too. The Finnish runners of the 70's were a small group of runners winning medals at Euro's, Oly games, and World XC- a small group.

WHenever a nation dominated it was a small group except for the Kenyans and Ethiopians now.

So, yes, it is a resurgence- we are good again!
