One Confirmed Death in Chicago Marathon

Not to mention the fact that these splits are obviously wrong. Starting from a position where it took 15 minutes + to get to the starting line, do you really believe he not only ran 18 minutes through 5k but did it through the wall of people in front of him?

i am from Midland. i didnt personally know him but i knew of him and i knew his wife and kids. its pretty obnoxious for you guys to be picking apart his race! dont you have anything better to do then talk about how he raced?! seriously, get a life!!!!

that means 18 minutes or sub six minute pace

Let's try this again, a little more slowly for some of you guys. Here are the splits for 3 runners named "Schieber". Notice anything? Here's a hint: according to your "second grade math", all of these runners went sub-19 for the first 5k and 30+ for all of the rest of them. Not that any of this should matter considering the outcome.

i'm glad the math seems fine to you. i'm sure your second grade teacher is proud. however, i think your college logic teacher might not be. as any numbnut who has watched a chicago marathon knows, it would be impossible for anyone to run sub 6:00 pace in that crowd. the splits are wrong.

you really think that if it takes you 15 full minutes to cross the starting line, youre going to go right into running 6 min/miles with thousands upon thousands of runners right in front of you?

the start time is the clock time. The split times are the chip time. The numbers are right. the way they are being interpreted by this thread is wrong. So, chad crosses the start at 15 minutes on the clock...this starts the chip...and then crosses the 5k at 33 minutes according to chip time. You guys runners by any chance?

People, the 15:25 has NO relation to any of the rest of the times on there.

Unfortunately, I was just diagnosed with MVP yesterday.... Not sure what causes this, or if this is a condition I've had for quite some time unknowingly. However, I ran the San Diego marathon in 2006, and I typically run about 2 half marathons and 2 ten-milers a year... Doc said no more full-marathons for me :-( However, I'm looking to get a second opinion. Does anyone else have this condition? Are you still able to run distances? Send me an email :-) Thanks!!

Um, I can't send you an email, since you didn't provide a link to your email address...but I *can* tell you that I was also diagnosed with MVP (about 15 years ago), and was told there was no reason whatsoever to be careful with physical activity, including marathons. As I understand it, MVP carries a significantly increased (but still very small) risk of heart infection, but not of heart attack or cardiac arrest or whatever leads people to drop dead during strenuous exercise.

I obviously know nothing about what might be going on in your case, and you should obviously listen to your doctor more than to a random message board poster. But for your own peace of mind (not to mention your marathoning career), I would definitely seek out a second opinion.

I remain puzzled as to why MVP would be listed as a cause of death, as news reports are implying, rather than simply a finding upon autopsy.

Anyone that writes anything negative about Chad Schieber on this message site is a complete total loser. I'm sure you've been a loser all your life and that's why you have to be a whimp and say stuff like that about Chad.

All I can say is that it takes a man to run a marathon. I don't care what level you're at. The person that said "you're supposed to have negative splits before you die" on this message board will for sure go to hell if there is such a thing. If not, you're a complete total idiotic loser.
