jesus what IU people do you hang around? there are only a few programs at the school that place people in good jobs. however, i know a ton of IU alums that graduated and joined incoming corporate classes stocked with Ivy league kids. either way, IU is vastly superior academically to ISU.

besides, most competent, talented IU grads leave indiana immediately upon graduation. that's the old 'brain drain' the state is always so worried about

also, dude. the thing about the razor back tattoo was said to point out that its not like a gigantic accomplishment or some grand quest to run for indiana state. you werent really part of a glorious, storied program that warrants tattooing its emblem on your body forever. people wont think that's cool later in life.

Went there AND ran there. Certainly wasn't the best guy on the team, but managed to score a few times in the "bigger" meets.

Had fun and made some friends, and was even part of McNichols' first team to win Intercollegiates in T&F. But I don't fool myself into thinking that ISU is some great cross country/track powerhouse. And I DEFINITELY don't delude myself into thinking that ISU is anything more than a crappy educational institution.

I haven't been 130 lbs since the 80's. I have to admit- this whole thing is a little "Christopher Hansonish". I rarely get on here unless Indiana State defeats IU. I mean - those guys on to catch a predator remind me of some of the guys on this thread- only there offenses aren't illegal. Big tough guys online who can't stick up for themselves in real life. i dont understand why the IU guys are getting on here, or really the ISU guys either. ISU has been better than IU in recent years, with the exception of the jeffersons and haas. and what the hell has IU done recently anyways? about as much as ISU...

Having pride in your program is the exact opposite of feeling inferior. So there are no accomplishments below that of competing for Arkansas, Oregon, or Stanford? If not, and if no one should have pride in their hard work or accomplishments at their particular school, then..... what? Are we a sport of elitists? Where would our sport be? If you were a member of the 1986 ISU squad, and a distance runner, than its pretty easy to figure out who you are.

Granted, the ISU distance program and the runners who have participated in it in recent years certainly are different from the rag-tag situation and attitude that permeated the team in McNichol's early years. Nonetheless, ISU is what it is: A second-rate educational institution with XC and T&F teams that are competitive at the second tier. I was there; I know. Don't make it out to be more than it was, is or ever will be.

Then again, you may have a point. I am, in fact, sad that I missed out on an opportunity to compete for a real team at a real school. I went to ISU because it was cheap and stayed for a little bit of scholarship money. I should have had the balls to to aim higher.

I'll give the Waytons and all their teammates of that era some credit, though. They sure as hell had McNichols fooled into thinking they were all little angels who did nothing but eat, drink and sleep Indiana State running. That's ALL we other alums ever heard from him, that those guys were all dedicated as hell and never risked their running careers by -- gasp! -- having a beer or partying.

Maybe someone ought to send John the x-trees link or something.

And for the record, places like TH and ISU hurt themselves. They offer nothing to take pride in!

The absolute funniest thing I've ever seen on a track (besides Geoff falling in the conference steeple in '97...and Kurt's indoor 4:44/9:15 double) was after the aforementioned 1500 at IU when those three IU dudes (just standing by, testing out their new iPods arm bands or some shit) made a remark like "Real classy Wayton." Kurt - literally 20 seconds after the race mind you - walks up uncomfortably close and tells them to repeat what they said. And like the 3 biggest homos West of Muncie, no one says anything. Not a peep. You know the Butthead face when something really uncool happens? That was their face. "Uhhh." I mean, you've got this dude right in front of you...this ugly fukkin dude...this balding, classless, ugly mother right there man...And and he's clearly gonna gain 50 pounds the day after he quits running...so if there's ever a chance to do anything - it's now. You can't wait man, cause you're gonna be a 140 pussy your whole life - even when you start drinking pop and balloon up to 153. So you better act man; cause you're not gonna get this chance again. Sounds like Waytonk was a real tough guy. I wasn't there, and I don't know him, but it almost sounds as though he preferred NOT to fight his battles on the track. The only thing worse is that McNichols didn't kick him off the team altogether.

Yet one more reason to be an embarrassed ISU alumnus...

Being a late 90's Purdue runner, I also despise IU. The attitude of their monster "future NCAA Champions" High School class (all from Indiana) was the absolute worst. Just a bunch of total DBs. Thank god only a couple of them actually did anything. About 10 guys simply fell off the face of the earth.

I think its pretty damn clear you sucked. God,, how bad is it now? to have such animosity towards a team that made the mistake of providing you a chance, so here you are, 20 years later no less- (I mean, you're in your 40's haha), and your personality is indicative of someone who left college with no friends, experiences, blaming everyone but themselves for their bad experience. It wasn’t the place, it was you, you’d be the same person now if you had attended Harvard, or Indiana, its your personality, your face, etc., not Terre Haute. If you don’t have the spine at 40 years of age to put a name behind your posts, than I doubt you'll be there Nationals weekend. The absolute shame is there was some great guys from your era: Eric, Scott, Mark, guys that made a huge difference and succeeded, and of course there are miserable pricks who still can’t quite understand years later what happened. Bottom line, you weren’t able to make it work in Terre Haute. That’s pretty depressing. If you have a wife, I’m sure she’s just enchanted with you! You seem like a real positive happy go lucky guy. ISU has its place, and if you did show up on Nationals weekend, you’d be shocked at how proud some are of their time spent here. A place is what you make of it. There are no wonderful cities in Indiana. Terre Haute is what it is, a rust-belt city, and you are what you are, a regretful 40-yr old blaming a town and school for your lack of wherewith tall. This post is about school pride and has regressed to 30 yr. olds giving each other a hard time. With the exception of you, you are actually pretty damn sad.
