the el guerrouj workout was 12x400m with 1 min rec in 54-55s! He did also use a workout of 4x800m with 3 min rec done in 1.48-1.49!

Thanks for the update. He seemed to have incredible range, 800m- 5k. Looking at some of his workouts, I think he could have run a heckuva 10,000m also, had he been able to keep it going longer. Just imagine such a tenacious runner with 3:49 mile speed!!

Joe is a policeman in Bentonville, Arkansas. He coached for a number of years (Bentonville High School) and won a number of state championships.
you're definetly correct. as i said, direct from john mcdonnel was that joe could have been the first ever under 27 minutes for 10km.
Yes, Joe probably could have had a much healthier and longer career if he would have gone up to the 5k and 10k.
He ran the 13:20 5k in 1990 and this was only his 3rd or 4th 5k after hs. I still remember that kick in the Pre 5k and I have not seen an American who has that sort of kick before or since. Padilla was in that race and catching up to Joe and Placesia and Joe just took off and "buried" everyone!!!!!! Doug P. had a very nice kick also!
Yes, but the glamour of the mile/1500 was and always will be very hard to pass up, especially when you are as good as Falcon was. Who is the last person to win the dream mile before Falcon? Anyone from US since Falcon???
I believe that Scott and/or Maree may have won the Dream Mile (but I do not believe that anyone since Falcon has won it)

there are plenty of those guys out there today. craig mottram is a perfect example of that having run 348.
He won NCAA 10K as a sophmore I believe. Just ran away from evryone last 400m.
Not quite everyone. Chris Brewster matched him pretty much stride for stride until the last straight when he gave up knowing it was hopeless.
Agreed...that was a great race as well...they were going at it that last lap but you had the idea that Joe was going to win...
His range was definitely much like Mottram (just about 8 inches shorter) As someone stated earlier, his acceleration was phenomenal. Does anyone have that Pre 5k race??? That was a great example of his acceleration.
anybody who know Joes weight training program?
i can tell you what his programme was the year of '92. he essentially lifted 2 times a week- he loved the weightroom. essentially it was a full body workout each time. mostly 3 x 10-15 depending on the day. he definetly lifted his legs- especially his hamstrings and seated leg presses. just routine movements- curls, military presses, triceps, etc. he also did plenty of situps and pushups each day as well. lastly, one of his favorite things was to see how many pullups he could do. i believe his record was 48 or something astronomical like that.
He is a legend among legends down here in Fayettevile.
can you post hios 2 weeks leading up to the dream mile in oslo 1990?
thanks

Malmo or anyone know what happened to that story or urban legend of Falcon?
This was posted a few years ago.

Drewr. Just curious. How/where are you working on Falcon's stuff? I'm originally from Springfield and knew the areas you mentioned. I'm an archivist too up in St.L. Do you need any help with digitizing the materials?
I'm interested!
Being from Springfield myself I have heard about a crazy fast mile by Falcon on the crappy little 12 lap to a mile, slow McDonald Arena track. I heard he pulled out a sub 4 on that? Anyone have any info that can agree with or deny that rumor?
DrewR--just a note of thanks for your generous work.
Can someone put that Dream Mile on here.
