Au contraire. I'd be surprised if he did win an NCAA title. Those jewels almost always go to the athletes with the biggest kicks, and I don't see McDougal running away from the field in any event.

I understood correctly the first time. Why would spikes matter? Are spikes different today than the ones I used to race in?

I watched McDougal run that 3:57 mile with a negative split, for the last four hundred meters by himself and significantly faster than the other 3 laps [i.e - a kick]

Why wouldn't having the fastest 1500 [equivalent] in the nation give him confidence and ability to kick and win a longer race like the 5k or 10k?

Maybe there's something I don't understand...

Malmo- didn't you have to avoid the track for an extended period (I think you've said it was a couple of years) because of plantar fasciitis? Wouldn't you agree that when running on the track, in spikes, there is more pressure being put on your feet, legs, etc. than, say, doing workouts on soft surfaces or in a slightly more substantial shoe? Isn't it commonly accepted that running high volume on the track, while in spikes, beats your legs/feet up more than other types of training? Seems like a fairly universally accepted truth... regardless of the effort (ie whether you are racing or 'working out'), doing high volume in spikes tends to take something out of your legs. I'm sure McD will be fine, but it seems like you are being a bit stubborn in acknowledging that this type of triple will inevitably take a toll on his legs. Best of luck to him, though- he's had a monstrous season so far.

I got plantar faciitis when I stepped in a hole while training on a frozen golf course. If you are having problems when wearing spikes then get another pair.

I'm not being stubborn at all, why the hell would tempo pace take a toll on McDougals legs, or yours, or anyone elses? I think you're being stubborn for not recognizing what kind of effort this triple is (or isn't) for McDougal.

There's a complete disconnect from reality here, and I'm positive it's not me.

Just because the times are slower doesn't mean it wasn't a good race or a good field. Have any of you ever heard of a tactical race? I mean seriously!

It seems that they are pretty important to Mcdougal since he is running all three races to help some of his teammates that would not a chance to win a championship by themselves get a team championship. He is good enough to get a sponsorship after college even if he never wins a NCAA title. But for now he has to do what he has to do.

Yikes! What types of workouts were you guys doing involving 9 miles on the track? Any particular reason the marathoners you trained with didn't just do the longer stuff on measured pavement? That much track work never led to little imbalance injuries? You guys must've been part machine.

I used to do that triple all in the same day!!! 10km usually about 9:30am, 1500 about 12:30pm, then the 5000 usually about 3:30pm. A bit more rest, yes, but still it sucked a$$.

This triple was probably just as much Josh's idea as much as it was his coaches. Being at the meet i found that Liberty Seems to be on a mission. They are represented in at least 5 finals tomorrow (just an esitmate) when they already had 28 points after the first day (pretty much just from Josh). I repsepect Josh for doing this even though i do believe this will hurt him in the long run. He is obviously head and shoulders above the rest of the comp, and if he was at some big east school he would only have been in the 5k, but since he is at liberty and it would be a big deal for them to win the IC4A's he is sapping it up just like it was high school. He is the man and i hope he wins the 1500 tomorrow.

No. He didn't race "large volume" this weekend. His effort last night was barely faster than tempo effort. He's a 13:20 5k guy who ran a 14:005k and a 30:00 10k. Why is that concept so difficult for you to understand?

If you were McDougal's coach would you have him race in the 1500m, 5000m and the 10000m at this conference meet? I can see the need to aquire team points but to run these three races even at a "tempo" pace should be avoided. Do you think the Wisconsin coach would allow his runners to triple at their conference meet even if the pace was slow. Ya I now Wisconsin has more distance guys that can score points then Liberty but tripling (actually four races with the 1500m heats) just seems ridiculous. What wrong with a 5000m/1500m double, seems more logical to me.

OK if he runs well at nationals then I guess Malmo, you know what you are talking about, but if he doesn't race well then you have no f****** clue even if you were once an American record holder. We will just have to wait and see.
