I don't know about NFL, but the punter or kicker for Notre Dame a few years ago was a tremendous HS track athlete. Nick Setta ,I believe. Ran cross country(I think he was all state in Illionis, high jumped, long hurdles, and 800 meters in track. I often wondered how good he could have been if he stayed with track.

As a former Michigan HS runner, I am amazed that Tyrone Wheatley and TJ Duckett did not have better NFL careers. The size, strength,and mobility of these guys were unreal. It has made me realize just how hard it is to be a top-tier NFL player.

At my DIII college, a top 5 runner (freshman) on our XC team went out for the football team as a sophomore and played the next three years.
Could it happen at the Division I level? It has surely happened once or twice in the last 50 years.
