He does not NEED to whine but he does. That is why we are saying that he is a whiner. The last few interviews I have heard from him he is whining that he does it with "blue collar" guys - yeah right - or that he does not respect coaches that recruit foreign athletes. That's fine sir. I ran on a team with foreign athletes and a lot of people don't respect Wetmore. Good coach - still a whiner. The two are independent.

One more important thing that I think should be mentioned is that if a CU athlete adopts the ridiculous anti foreign mindset of Herr Wetmore then he/she will enter the international track community always with the thoughts that they just do not have the talent as someone else because they are foreign. They are only great because they had that mystical wizard (sarcasm) called Mark Wetmore as a coach. Likely they will not have success.

I'm not sure I ever agreed that he's not a whiner. However, there is a HUGE difference between being anti-foreign and wanting to use American dollars to support and develop Aemrican athletes. Wetmore is not a biggot, just because you, like so many, have a narrow definition of what that is.

I remember being in college right around the time Kara Wheeler really started coming on and turning heads. We were in the same region as CU and had a women's team pretty loaded with solid female foreign talent, but only to the tune that we were hoping to challenge for a bid to nationals or at least secure an at-large. A news item came out that a set of talented twin female runners were transferring from somewhere like Vanderbilt to CU. I mentioned this to our coach and he kind of shook his head and chuckled, "the rich get richer". It's not like he stuck around at Seton Hall or went over to Rutgers and built a national power there, he went out to Eugene and when he hit roadblocks there headed to Boulder to seek out an easier situation, to set up shop in a place that naturally attracts great engine components. He in a sense bought his engine by moving his shop out of state and to somewhere that would appeal to a better engine than he could build back in Jersey.
