I think it's unbelievable that we're discussing something that happened 13 years ago, when these guys were still among the best in the world at what they did. That's rare in any sport, but especially running.

That doesn't settle it at all. I don't know if I'd give it to Tergat, but I think he's closer to Geb than most give credit for.
I think that Tergat's breadth, notably his marathon legacy, count for a lot of points in the GOAT1 vs. GOAT2 battle.
he also holds the world record for most consecutive world xc championships; AND the most total world xc championchips in a career.
that alone, WITHOUT his WORLD RECORD marathon performance, is enough for him to be the GOAT. hands down.
all of his records and times in such a broad range of distance, including his WR marathon (which many physiologists/scientists/spectators/coaches/any other knowledgeable people, believe will NEVER be broken again.)
all of this accumulate to a lifetime career which could never be matched with any other human athlete.
therefore he IS the GOAT.
also, may i add, those events are from world xc where terget and geb/bekele usually werent even in the same race.
tergat owns the long course, which is indeed the tougher course/race.
i dont care how many times geb and bekele won the short course. winning the short course several times still doesnt equal winning the long course 1 time, because winnng the long course is a much greater feat.

This makes perfect sense because Bekele has a terrible track record on the long course. Don't remember the results off the top of my head, but he seems to struggle big time on the longer XC courses. He could never win a gold.
Geb has the record for the most gold medals ever won at the Olympics. See, I can make up stats just like you.
Anyone who has followed distance running since the mid 1990s SHOULD clearly know that Geb has had a much better running career than Tergat. And I'm a big-time Tergat fan!
As far as the greatest distance runner ever, that is very debatable. My list would include Paavo Nurmi, Emil Zatopek, Ron Clark (a lot of people forget about Clark because he didn't win an Olympic gold, but neither has Tergat and Clark has held many more world records than Tergat), Lassie Viren, Henry Rono, Miruts Yifter, Paul Tergat, Hichem El Geurrouj, Geb and Bekele.
If I had to make a list, here it goes...
1 Geb
2 Nurmi
3 Zatopek
4 Viren
5 Geurrouji
6 Rono
7 Tergat (if he can medal in '08, he will move between Viren and Geurrouji)
8 Bekele (he will most likely end up at #4 behind "the big three")
9 Clark
10 Yifter
Hmmm.....there's this fellow....Bekele I think is his name...who also won five consecutive long course world x-c championships (and dominated whilst doing so), and of course just decided to hop in the short course race each year and win five consecutive short course championships. I would grant Bekele the title as the most dominating x-c runner ever. Having said that, x-c ranks behind track and road running in terms of distance runnning importance.
His marathon world record will never be broken?????? Do these people forget than Sammy Korir (a good runner no doubt, but not in the realm of the Geb's, Tergat's, and Bekele's in terms of accomplishments) was ONE SECOND behind Tergat? If Korir can run 2:04:56 then if Geb gets perfect conditions Tergat's WR will be broken.
A lifetime carrer that is unmatchable????? That's laughable. Bekele has matched him in X-C. Bekele has outshone him where it counts - the track. Geb has matched him on the roads (already broken his 1/2 marathon WR and come close to the marathon) and absolutely DOMINATED him on the track - never losing in fact. That isn't even considering runners from older ages - Zatopek's 5k-10k-marathon triple, Viren's 5k-10k double double, and Nurmi's Olympic golds far surpass anything Tergat has accomplished.
Tergat is great, no doubt about that. He had the misfortune, however, to be running at the same time as Geb, perhaps the greatest ever.
For one thing what was that question I had to answer, and another, you did NOT just compare Dathan and Kenny B. in terms of being ready to move up, did you????
