Training from Stockholm to Eugene
July 24-July 30: I got back to Madison, Wisconsin on July 27 after roughly 25 hours of travel. I was able to come off the 5K surprisingly well, but after the long travel and the hard race, I just took the rest of the week easy and got my legs back under me (66 "Badger miles" for the week). I thought that my coach, Jerry Schumacher, would get me back on the track for a light workout and clean out the legs a bit on Friday or Saturday, but he didn’t. I was a little worried because just running miles was making my legs feel sluggish and flat. I was able to get a 90-minute run in, though, which was really nice.
August 31-August 6: I knew coming into the week that Jerry wanted me to get some strength work in to help carry me through the rest of the season. I was fine with that, because during the first European session, I was not able to do any long repeats or a long run. So it was actually nice to get back to the basics.
Monday morning: 35 minutes/5 miles easy with Chris Solinsky.
Afternoon: 50 minutes standard run (6:00 pace), 6 X hill repeats, 5 minutes jog, 6 X 200m (29-27) with 200m jog recovery, 10 minutes cooldown. The hills are a strength drill run up-tempo but keeping form. The 200s are a speed drill to keep the legs used to race pace (clean them out).
Total: 15 miles
Wednesday: 8 mile progression run. Starting out at 5:50 pace and getting down to 5:20 pace. Two-mile warm-up and cooldown. Felt very easy but legs didn’t feel like they had much bounce in them.
Total: 12 miles
Friday morning: 35 minutes/easy 5 miles.
Afternoon: 3 X 300m with 90-second rest (3-minute rest after set) in 44, 44, 44. 2 X 800m with 3-minute rest (3 min rest after set)in 2:02, 2:01. 3 X 300m with 90-second rest in 44, 43, 42. 25-minute warm-up, 15-minute cooldown.
Total: 12 miles
The rest of the days were easier recovery runs, usually starting out slow and getting down close to 6:00 pace. Long run for the week was only 10 miles because of the 1500m coming up in Eugene. I wanted to double a little more during the week, but I didn’t want my mileage to get high because I needed a good time in the 1500 so I could get into the "A" 1500 races in Europe. Total for the week was 70 Badger miles.
