By “objective credentials” all you mean is a standardized test score. And as much as you might complain about others on this thread, all that you are saying is just “no way that many blacks should be admitted!”
Correct. And also more Asians should be admitted.
Not sure why the woke mods deleted this.
Toss in a little woke boogeyman for good measure, nice touch.
And only racial discrimination could be the answer for why more blacks were admitted than you think should be?
Can we not at least all agree that the UCSD faculty themselves per the first link are correct, that the pool of matriculants has gone way downhill since we went to test-optional admissions? They are the white tower liberal institutionalists who are finally acquiescing to a reality that the rest of us already knew existed. Because they can no longer overlook it and sweep it under the rug.
And that’s incredibly sad for a UC. UCSD and UCLA are supposed to be hallowed institutions that were damn difficult to get into and only took way above average test scores. I mean, what is a UC education worth anymore when your matriculants can’t do third grade math? Is every graduate going to study psychology and be a social worker?
Yep. If you go the open letter, even Berkeley faculty are signing on. It’s not just a conservative/lib thing, we should all take issue with the continued degradation of our universities.
In an open letter, the faculty members pointed to a November report from the University of California San Diego Senate-Administration Workgroup on Admissions, which revealed that the number of first-year students with math skills below a middle school level increased nearly 30-fold since 2020, when the system first suspended its standardized testing requirements.
Wow, turns out prioritizing race, sexuality and inflated high school GPAs for college admissions wasn’t such a good idea. Who would have guessed!
Sats are easily inflated by $. I've seen it up close.
Ten Democrat downvoters want DEI graduates with barely middle school math skills building bridges.
You guys are a piece of work. All you do is call us the academic elite but in the same breath say we don't know anything about math.
Do conservatives ever here what comes out of their mouths.
So, for the record, you don't support DEI initiatives that place students with barely middle school math skills into undergraduate engineering programs?
Even more annoying that a kid admitted to a UC can’t do basic middle school arithmetic. That’s embarrassing and revealing.
“We now observe preparation gaps so severe that instructors must reteach middle-school mathematics while simultaneously teaching the material students need for sciences, engineering, economics, and other quantitatively demanding fields,” the professors wrote. “UC has been a national leader in supporting under-resourced students to do well in mathematics. However, UC has finite resources and can help only so many students, and only when the preparation deficits they need to overcome are within reach.”
If you are admitted to a UC engineering school, and can't demonstrate mastery in college algebra and trig, let alone calclus, GTFO!
Is or is not your argument that they must be factoring race into admissions because there are too many blacks?
Isn't equity supposed to make our universities look like America?
When more than 13% of blacks are being admitted to a medical school, that isn't equity.
It is DEI (race based preference).
Are you saying that every US university should be forced to have an enrollment that perfectly matches every possible US demographic apportionment there could be?

No, I think that admittance should be by merit.
You?
So why did you ask if they should be forced to match US demographics? But sure. A variety of meritorious factors. Of which a single standardized test score is hardly sufficient.
If you get cancer do you want the DEI doctor or the doctor that graduated at the top of the class performing the surgery?
What’s a DEI doctor?
I believe it’s a doctor who allegedly got in with some benefit of doubt but passed all the required exams and training by the end of the degree certifying him/her as qualified for practice.
