We merged two Mary Cain threads into 1. The 2nd one was entitled, "Update: Mary Cain makes another sexual allegation - Alberto Salazar looked at her exposed breasts while she was sleeping"
At this point, it is time to ask questions such as:
1) "Has Mary Cain ever gotten along with anyone?"
2) "Who hasn't wronged Mary Cain in some way?"
3) "Where in the heck were her parents during all of this? Why are they not being called out?"
I used to support Mary Cain for obvious reasons. But at this point, it seems like her primary goal is to make as much money as possible by playing the victim. And in doing so, she is making her claims less and less believable regardless of whether or not they are true.
At this rate, I'm expecting an exposé in a couple years on how she was mistreated at Atalanta.
"creepy coach, who took perverse interest in the sex lives of his female runners"
A statement like that in a published book without any proof could lead to a lawsuit. She is specifically identifying the individual (a name is not needed; it is easy to identify the coach).
Yes and no.
What "proof" did Kara Goucher have? Her word? She didn't go to the authorities. Why didn't she tell Adam and then he'd have "word" with Alberto? Sorry, it just never added up to me.
Salazar could have sued her as well, but he moved on.
What proof does Salazar have that Goucher was lying? If it’s just one person’s word against another, a court will take the defendant’s side. How can damages be awarded when the truth is an unknown?

My understanding is that the opposite is true. The plaintiff has to prove the accusation is false.
How is she going to get along with her Residency PEERS and SUPERIORS? Women doctors have it tough enough without having tons of traumatic baggage going back to HS.
Wow. Reading the comments above, I feel validated in my feelings after just finishing her book. It's a quick read. I was hoping for something else, I guess. It's an absolute piece of trash. Never have I read such a petty piece of "literature" in my life. It's as if she kept a diary next to her bed with the words "People I Hate" scratched on the cover. And then she sold it to a publisher. I hope she gets sued by the HS coach. I felt so bad for him. And the part about Julian needing his cancer medication, and she calls him a "loser." There is something wrong with Ms. Cain and her family. Shame on those who have endorsed this book and thought that I would want to read it.

This isn't a totally well rounded analysis of the book. There is some stuff that is outrageous-mainly behavior from Salazar, Treasure and Hasay.
She also calls out other runners who use her name and her story for their benefit but don't follow it up with actions. I think that's fair.
But Mary WAS petty. Speaking of cancer survivors, the most alarming chapter was Mary describing her experience at 2013 USA indoor, the year Salazar tried to have Gabe Grunewald DQed. Mary went on and on about how mean all the non Nike athletes were for staging a protest after she won the mile, taking her "moment" away from her. I was actually flabbergasted she would write that. They had every reason to protest. Did she ever think that Gabe was upset for having her moment taken away?

How does Hasay figure into this? What is the deal with their relationship?
Anecdotally, I know a couple people who ran with her in high school. They did have some issues with Mary, but they loved the rest of the team and the coach. Those people didn’t have any issues with our college coaches or teammates.

I’m sorry but Mary is the problem. No one else, just her

She won’t! MC isn’t even taking her step 1 exam to move on to clinical yr. She’ll take 7 yrs to do 4 and then just tour speaking on the female triad, claiming MD status with no license or residency.
I was so happy to see her move on but just when we thought she was gone, here she comes back to haunt us.
I’m not reading the book but did she slander Hasay?

This is exactly how I felt after reading Kara and Des’s books. Probably won’t read this one.
Mary's attitude and pattern of behavior is very toxic not just for others but FOR HER. She's highly rewarded (financially and emotionally) every time she trots out a victim narrative. So she chases the high of doing it again and again. But the problem for her is that this has become her only view of success.
How is she going to go and actually achieve, being a bad@ss doctor, dealing with extremely difficult and stressful scenarios daily, when her default is "I am owed by others and I only succeed when I am a victim of others". Who wants to hire such a person? Who wants to trust such a person as their doctor? She is a liability wherever she ends up. And she doesn't even realize that she is self sabotaging.
Bro, she may be going to med school; but she’ll never do a residency or see a patient in her entire career. She’s using it as a parlay into “biomedical ethics and medical humanities”. Complete waste of a spot in the class.

The fact that she’s doing a book tour instead of board exams with her class is all you need to know.
Why doesn't Salazar sue Cain then?! You got one guess...
Streisand effect. A small niche group of people know who Salazar is. A even smaller niche will read Cain's book. It would be worse for his reputation to blow the thing up into front page news than to just let the vast majority of the world continue to have no idea who he is.

Was probably unfair for me to lump Hasay in with Salazar and Treasure who are real abusers. But Hasay's actions as Mary describes them did cross a line with me.
I'll start by saying I think Mary had unrealistic expectations for her competitors and NOP training partners. She wanted them to be always warm and cheerful towards her. At competitions when everyone is in it for themselves, I think the most you can expect is politeness.
Mary accused teammates like Shannon Rowbury for example for being petty and manipulative, especially during workouts. But IDK, Shannon might have her own side of the story.
But Mary says Jordan actually made comments towards her that were needlessly mean spirited. It's okay to ignore Mary or not be warm towards her. It's not okay to make rude and snide comments to a high schooler when you are a college graduate.
Jordan would make fun of Mary for being fat. She also made fun of her hair, saying things like how she worried about going to Oregon because she worried her hair would become dark like Mary's, and called her hair "thick and unruly". She also made really underhanded comments about Mary's dedication or work ethic, that felt uncalled for. It was gross to read about a 22 year old treating a 17 year old like that. There was no need for it.
