Now this is one I'm upset with myself for not thinking of initially. David MF Torrence! The literal streets of Berkeley will never forget him hammering down those hills! As an LA native and someone who wasn't too far from Loyola, plus someone in high school when Dave was at his running peak fighting for US teams at a few different distances, he's a favorite for sure. I also remember a cool story from an old TrackTalk board that he came by a Loyola summer practice one year and gave away a pair of those yellow Adidas adizeros that Haile Gebreselassie used to wear. I wish I remembered more details but I feel like he had finally gotten a deal with Adidas out of college and grinding for it and the first thing he wanted to do was give away a pair of shoes to kids at his old high school. What a guy! RIP DT, gone but definitely never forgotten!
DJ Principe and Brodey Hasty in HS - both very close to being sub 4 milers. DJ didn't get under til grad school. Not sure Hasty ever did, but he was clutch as hell at every NCAA XC champs he ever raced.
I'd go for Geoffrey Kamworor. Never really made it to the top for the tree on the track or the roads but he was a HM and XC beast for a brief period. I still like to see him on a start list even though I know he'll probably just run 2:04 and finish 7th. There's always that faint hope he'll have a great day and drop something massive, a 2:02 maybe.
Purely UK, I'd also say Jess Warner-Judd. From sub-2 in the 800 to 67 HM and 2:24 in the marathon, and 8th place in the World Champs over 10000m. Good XC runner at the European level as well.
I'll add another Dyestat guy, maybe a bit more divisive: AJ Acosta. I was a few years late coming to the running boards to really know much about "AJ Nation" but I remember he was a damn good runner in high school, for Oregon, and had some early promise as a pro. When I was really following the sport closely he was scrapping for a contract and I remember an interview where he said something about his trainers having 700+ miles on them because he's waiting for a contract so he doesn't have to pay for new ones. Not always well received but he was part of the Oregon NCAA 1500 sweep, sandwiched between Wheating and Centro and he came second to Ryan Gregson in the Pre international mile one year (2010?) in like 3:53. Also had one of the greatest social media handles @omfgchocotaco!
