This is exactly it. This modern "strategy" of "running the shortest distance no matter what" which has become so prominent largely due to wavelight and "performance efficiency" has/is secretly wrecking race instinct and race craft.
I said this earlier, Hollingsworth should have won this race going away. Same way Hocker should have won the world indoor 3000m going away. With 120m to go she is directly behind her with Caldwell behind her, nothing is stopping her choosing the shoulder over choosing the rail - and yet we are choosing the rail. World indoor 3000m Josh Kerr chooses the shoulder, Cole Hocker chooses the rail.
