The only sports world wide where you’ll make a ton of money, even if it’s a base salary are the nba, nfl, mlb, soccer and the nhl. That’s only 5 sports world wide of dozens.
Exactly. The sport isn’t popular nation wide. It’s like the WNBA, you get paid for what you bring in monetarily. Unless you are top top, you don’t make enough to retire on. Centro’s contract post worlds and Olympic championship was widely thought to be close to a million annually.
Yes, you could make the same argument for Caitlin Clark. She's vastly underpaid.
Now, you tell me why it's bad to recognize that.
Caitlyn Clark made about $12M in 2025. What would she have to earn to be vastly overpaid?
Clark’s contract last year was 78,066. She made 16.1 million in endorsement deals last year. It’s the top of the top that make that money to retire in a sport that doesn’t bring in revenue.
Guy, I'm agreeing with you. That's the premise of my original post. The kid is not being rewarded fully because his sport doesn't generate the revenue.
The base salary this year for the WNBA because of what Clark brought in in revenue for the sport will be now 270-300k based on experience with an average salary of 583K.

Throw in Golf and Tennis, that makes 7.
If there was a 17 year old World Champion in any of those 7 sports, what would they earn?
Very good point. When an athlete starts out in the spotlight so young that means they'll have a longer time for critique as they move through their career. I would almost rather be someone like a Nick Symmonds where I went to a D3 school and have success while not being in the laser light of everyone's attention until going pro after college. CL is looking at 5 years of that kind of attention before he even gets to being old enough to graduate college.
And I say I'd "almost" rather be that other kind of athlete because there's the whole thing of him now getting appearance fees, money from shoe contracts and endorsements, etc. that, if he has someone to help him plan and manage over the next 5-8 years, will set him up for the rest of his life plus another generation or two by the time he retires at 28.
Did they ask athletes that had already won a gold or athletes that hadn't won gold yet? Because those are 2 very different groups.
I imagine it's easier to put your life on the line when the death triggering event is only a remote possibility. When the death triggering event is a certainty betting your life isn't so easy.
If you asked Cole Hocker if he'd be okay with dying in 2028, he'd probably be a hard no.
I was stating the only 5 sports world wide that have a huge base salary. I’m not going to dignify a response to a Champion in tennis because tennis is way more popular world wide.

Correct. So is Golf.
The kid is an underpaid prodigy because his talent is in an unpopular sport. Seems like a shame to me.

Is Lutkenhaus going to be boots on the ground in Iran?

Golf, tennis, auto racing, boxing, MMA, and horse racing (jockey).
7/10 trolling. Really pretty good. But to carry this trolling further, what really is your position here? Is it just a vent about track and field’s status? Is it a suggestion that Cooper at least try another sport? Is it a cry to create a GoFundMe for Cooper? I will applaud you for getting such reactions because it is a bit like Pavlov’s dog in that some runners or athletes seem to get agitated when they perceive their sport is somehow being disparaged, but I guess it is a bit odd to me because the market tends to value certain sports and their stars in varying degrees and the alternative is what exactly? If every kid in the world were trying to be the best 800m runner in the world, maybe the US would have a handful of Coopers and he wouldn’t be so special, and maybe the world record would be 1:40.07 or something. But again, nice trolling.
