The truth is that most people in the sport of all ability levels wish they had been a little bit faster. That is true regardless of talent level and accomplishment. Sometimes we realize we could have done something a little bit differently and sometimes we run into the cruel truth that we did everything that we realistically could have and our goal was beyond the capacity of our talent. I was a division 1 also ran and it was a bit of both. I should have done things a little bit differently to be a little bit better, but even if I had, I would have reached my capacity before being as fast as I wanted to be. I still loved it. I still love running, even if not as seriously and not nearly as competitively anymore. Only a few people "get anywhere" in this sport, but that doesn't mean the experience of doing it isn't rewarding.
