A take from a European on X who has been viewing interviews with the people of Greenland:
I keep struggling to explain one very simple thing to people pushing the “we need Greenland for strategic purposes” narrative.
People aren’t just angry, they’re scared.
And the knee-jerk reply I get is always the same: “So, you’re not scared of Russia?”
First of all - yes, obviously we are scared of Russia. Second - this is not remotely the same situation!
Here’s the part they’re refusing to understand:
There’s a difference between being attacked by a violent criminal (Russia), and being threatened by your father, cousin, brother, or long-term friend (the U.S.).
Both are frightening - but only one of them shatters your trust and sense of reality.
Nobody in Europe ever expected this kind of rhetoric from an allied country we’ve cooperated with, trusted, and aligned with for decades.
You expect aggression from enemies. You do not expect it from your friends.
So stop this rhetoric.
Because whether you realize it or not, you’re doing Russia’s and China’s work for them - undermining trust, sowing fear, and slowly dismantling the Atlantic alliance from the inside. Moscow and Beijing are saving on bullets right now, don’t help them
