Would Prefontaine be the legend that he is now if he had lived and won the 10,000 in Montreal? It would have been big news and brought loads of acclaim. It would have been an accomplishment along the lines of Mills' and Dellingers' gold medals from Tokyo or Shorter's from Munich. All of these guys are very well respected and legendary. I don't know how any of their legends compare to Prefontaine's. None seem to get discussed here as much as Prefontaine does. Mills was the subject of one movie, Prefontaine of two but both were inspired by the tragedy of his premature death. Maybe there would have been no movies if he was still alive. I imagine his legacy would be along the lines of Dellinger, Mills, and Shorter.
On the other hand we're giving him a fantasy gold in Montreal and in reality it's far from certain he gets that. Let's give him a bronze medal in Montreal, maybe a win or two at Bislett over the next four years, and no more Olympics because of the '80 boycott and being well past his prime by LA. Are there movies? Do we see quotes from him? Is he in Nike ads?
Schul won gold in 1964, not Dellinger. It's a shame that Schul is so often forgotten, and it shows that not all gold medal winners receive the same attention. I think Schul's win was overshadowed by Mills' because the latter was such a big upset.
If Pre had won in 1976, it would have been huge. If Nike has done so well promoting him and keeping his memory alive based on what he did before his untimely death, just imagine what they could have done if he had won gold while wearing Nike shoes!
I mentioned the context of how Team USA did not do so well on the track at the 1976 Olympics. We can also consider that the Games were held in North America (easier for Americans to attend and/or follow), it was the middle of the running boom, and there would have been a big deal made about him dethroning Lasse Virén. Combine all those factors with his charisma. Nike would have marketed him to the moon.
If Pre had merely won bronze in Montreal like you suggest? Probably no movies.
