AOTW Picks -

Women

Sprints- Alethia Olson-Skog beating Roghan-Press in her debut race is incredibly impressive. She ranks 23rd in the country now. Press is obviously a long sprinter, but a win is a win and Bethel has another elite talent. The Moundsview pipeline continues. Honorable mention to Allison Hookom with a strong opener of 58.26 good for 16th in the country and Bennie frosh hurdler winning hurdles and triple jump.

Mid-Distance - Shalom Sulungaine takes the MIAC lead by more than 5 second in the 600m. Olaf's Wyatt move onto the national list closely followed by super frosh Tittel and Nemet of Carleton.

Distance - Kate Fox of Mac claims the MIAC lead over several nationals qualifiers. Liston dominates in her second consecutive 3K. She clearly was tempoing last week.

Jumps - The top 3 women in the Triple Jump are Gustie women. Loftness claims the win this week.

Throws - Strikesky of Scholastica continues to impress. Lexi Brainer of Hamline is knocking on the door! Both are nationally ranked.

Men

Sprints - Kubicek claims the MIAC lead in the 200 and leaves Collegeville as a double-winner in the 200 & 400. He ranks 18th in the country in the 400. Pryce gets the runner-up nod for his strong hurdle day.

Mid-Distance -

The seeding rules prevented a great matchup in the 600. Fun fact, five of the top 15 times in the country are from the MIAC. Relatively unknown Ole Jackson Bullock led from the gun to move into the top two in the MIAC. He;s our pick this week

Distance - Gabe Nichols remains the top miler in the MIAC with his conference leading win and addition to the national list.

Jumps - Isaiah Watson and Austin Schloeder both take substantial MIAC leads and now rank in the top 25 in the country in Triple Jump & Pole Vault.

Throws - Beseth easily wins shot put by more than three meters at St. John's.

Yeah, lots of conferences don’t run the 600 and it’s not contested at nationals. That speaks more to the MIAC including it for some political reasons. I assume some schools with good mid distance crews are trying to maximize points. It is weird that 6/8/k are all run at conference so you can get massive points with a good 800 crew

We all know that the dark horse of the MIAC is Ethan Martel. After scoring in the indoor mile last year, we must expect greater things this year, don't count out the real dark horse.

Same goes for the 4 x 200. Or others run the 300 and 500. It’s Indoor, doing different events is fun and more athletes make conference. Why would you not celebrate the rankings?

Also... With Torstenson ranked 2, being ranked 3 doesn't mean much. The MIAC doesn't seem to have gotten a great start in the 3k.

The Johnnies and Mac have only run one race. The list will get faster, but with a big graduating class last year and no Mo, I don’t expect anything to be as fast. Doesn’t look like too many of the so-called big name MIAC guys put in the work after cross country. Ihrke looks ready for something fast and some of the Ole 800 group will run close to the national level, but I don’t expect much else. Good thing we have the throwers in Duluth and Bethel/Johnnie sprinters!

St. Olaf men ranked 11th and St. Scholastica ranked 16th in the country. Not sure how that is when neither will be able to win the MIAC Champs. Probably just need more marks from Bethel and the Johnnies. And maybe the Gusties on the women's side. They graduated a lot, so I don't know if they will be as strong nationally.

What matchups are we looking forward to this weekend? Bethel sprints vs. Johnnies? Looks like a good 600 with Owen and Lelinga. Kubicek travels to Olaf, that's a bit wider track so we should expect something fast, although he probably should race at Mankato for better competition.

Lelinga enters the mix this weekend, but we are yet to see some big names compete or be entered - Liu, Schreiner, Reis, Fitzgerald. When will we see them?

Word out of northfield is THE DARK MOOSE has vanquished the naysayers and has returned to claim his throne. Be warned

Looks like St. John's isn't using the stupid sprint seeding. Good to see all the top 400 and 4 x 400 relays racing together. We all know that's why Bethel broke with long standing tradition to go to St. John's this weekend. It's too bad, because I'd like to see Kubicek race the Bethel long sprint squad.

Some great 800's at Olaf today.

Landen is back with a nice 6.81 opener. Nelson runs 22.10 on the tight turns of Collegeville. Victor does appear to be healthy. Can't wait to see him mix into the 800 with Ihrke and the Oles. Pryce continues to roll in the hurdles and they have another future All-American in freshman Swanson. And Timmy Ball is figuring out the weight. Bethel is loaded yet again.

Scholastica has a gem in their freshman hurdler. Beseth and Monreal are now top 10 in the weight.

A Gustie will win the MIAC Heptathlon and Decathlon this year. It has been ages since that has happened.

Brauer enters the mile conversation and doubles back with a strong 2:33. The bigger story is the return of Indy. He can compete for the win in any event 600-3000.

The Johnnies had some great K's as they ease their way into the season.

Kinda expected more from Turlington. Is it possible he's plateauing? I've seen some questions about their coaching plan on another thread. It seems like the top guys are coached by a different coach. Gabe running that fast all by himself without the benefit of the pacer is very encouraging. I'd say Roy is back too after a strong 5000m last night.
