Right as the final regional is going final, we'll start a live stream at 2pm ET to tell you who is selected for NCAAs. You can access it here or on x or on facebook/instagram.
Back in the day, we used to use a simple spool. Each number had a tear-away tag on it. As the runners crossed the line, they were put in order (sometimes by physical force) by officials at the finish line. They then entered the chute, narrow enough for only a single file line so nobody could try to move ahead of anyone else. Tags were torn off at the end of the chute and put on the spool in order. Afterward, the tags were numbered in finish order, taken off the spool, and taped to a large table under each team's name. Any team without 5 finishers was eliminated and for the rest, points were added up by hand.
It worked about as fast as the South Regional did it by computer today.
Here are the most recent women's projections with 3/9 regions completed (South, Midwest, Southeast). South Carolina finished 2nd in the Southeast and have qualified for their first NCAA XC championships in program history.

Really inspiring to see Angelina Perez qualify for nationals-- a hard-working kid who's had to overcome a lot. I remember when people on here said she would never be back. Really shows the transformation that can happen when athletes are surrounded by a great support system.
Even though NC State won and did it without Hartman & Sadie I think that we can effectively put a fork in them. Not impressed.
and you reason for thinking that?
Putnam seems to be done. Hartman is done. Gapes gives up 5 seconds in the last K. Three passed Napoleon in the last K. Rauber & Templier did OK but they were back a bit. And where was Englehardt? What's up with her? Outside of the low sticks of Gapes, Napoleon, and Michalak, they're going to struggle at 4 & 5. They're not beating BYU & Oregon like that. They'll take 3rd.
