Reminds me of that British woman who won the US Open out of nowhere a few years ago, Emma Radascu, and then she promptly ditched her coach and hasn't won anything since.
Good shout, lots of similarities between the two
- Massive breakthrough at a young age: Indoor HS 800 record for Hoey, US open win as an 18yo qualifier for Raducanu
- Big expectations, sponsorship deals: Hoey signs long-term Adidas deal, Raducanu signs million-dollar deals with luxury brands
- Extended stagnation after breakthrough: Hoey stuck at 1:47 for 5 years after going pro, Raducanu falls out of the top 100 and can't make it past the second round at a major
- Overbearing parents: Hoey's dad is a rich finance guy who builds him a track, Raducanu's dad is a rich finance guy from Romania who's the classic controlling "tennis parent"
- Constant coaching turnover: Hoey went through 6 coaches in 6 years, Raducanu's had at least 9 coaches since 2021
At least Hoey had a second breakthrough with Rinaldi. Raducanu's been doing better recently but still anyone's guess if she can return to major contention.
