Yup. It is what it is folks. Meylan isn’t perfect, but he is very good at this and if you watch it for a few years you can often get a good feel for how a given race will turn out. You can’t just look at the winner or the times. It’s relative.
Post season for this Doug Soles coached runner will be really fun.
Soles might be able to match Brosnan for guys who broke 4 in HS.
Brosnan has a 3:56, two 3:43s or faster, and a 4:00
Soles has a 4:00 and a few 4:04s. Not bad, but not the same at all.

Only 1 of Brosnan's guys broke 4 in the full mile. Obviously they had other who basically did. I just find it amusing that despite how many fast individuals over the years they were never able to get more than one.
I don’t know why everyone is so surprised by the kids time. he ran way faster his junior than German did. He has faster shoes. The course was in better condition not to mention that he had some of the run with for a few miles then a kid from Riverbank. I think he ran four flat for 1600 m last spring. Not a big surprise.

It withstood the NP guys all pushing each other. There were 10 sub 8:50 guys from CA in 2024 and not one of them could break it. Taking a record that has stood for 18 years on the CA state meet course that withstood several serious attempts and the addition of super shoes. Yeah, we are surprised especially by how much he beat it. An 8:33 guy and a 3:57(i) guy gave a run at it last year and it stood easily.

Dude, a guy who would go on to run 13:34(!!!) that spring took a swing at the course record and missed. Two other guys, one who would go on to run 7:55 that winter and another who would run 3:36 that spring also went for it, and didn't even get particularly close.
FOUR guys who would run sub-4 that winter or spring have raced on that course without having broken the record, alongside two guys at 3:43 or faster, and two more at 4-flat.
This record being broken by ANYONE is extraordinary - the conditions, shoes, whatever else, are in my mind, close to irrelevant. The only course in the US that has consistently had runners of a better caliber on it in is Glendoveer - and even that has only been used for a little over a decade. Woodward has been raced on under the exact same layout since the 70s.

201 speed rating for Jackson. German would’ve been sub 13:55.
Speed ratings should absolutely not be used to compare across eras. It is a massively flawed system. If this is a 201, there’s no chance we’ll ever see anything 207+ ever again. Unless people genuinely believe cross country runners peaked 20-30 years ago and no one will ever come close to that level again this system must be discredited.
The highest performance in recent memory is Nico Young’s 205 at NXN. He took down a stacked field. The guy who beat Virgins record (which LV and Chris Derrick failed to do) lost by 14 seconds, and it’s not like he had a bad day like some top guys have recently (L+L, Powell, etc.), Nico was just that much better.
There are probably 60 guys who have got a 205+ rating from 1990-2012, and since then it’s become borderline impossible. I don’t know about you, but I don’t think Nico Young’s run at NXN is outside the top 50 hsxc performances ever.
Spencer takes 8 seconds off a record that only all time greats have even come within 5 seconds of, and he barely cracks 200?

I don't get what the big deal. In the past 2 years NOBODY has gone over 198 speed rating. We have someone who got a 201+ which is 10 seconds faster than anyone in the country in the past year and you are complaining about it? Just let it go. Speed ratings are for fun and not to be taken to the extreme.

Yeah that’s my point, that’s a pretty big indictment of the system. Not a single person over 198 in two years? There were footlocker races with the entire top 15 over 198 in the 2000s. Either the ratings should be recalibrated or there should be some disclaimer on the site (maybe there is idk) that marks aren’t comparable year over year. Because as it stands now, speed ratings have people saying German would run 13:55
the point is that when the average runner gets faster and more people take the sport seriously it gets harder to seperate yourself from the pack. Obviously in 2025, the average runner is much faster now and that is why it's difficult to get a higher speed rating than back in 2022 and even more so in the earlier years.

no it just means that it's getting more difficult for the top runners to seperate themselves from the *pack* because the *pack* is much faster now. They have strava, great team dynamics, great coaches which just makes everyone faster, resulting in lower speed ratings for the top runners.
Man that 2022 a graveyard of talent.. anyone who says girls fall of the face of the earth after high school just needs to follow boys high school running.. guess jury is still out on some of these guys -

That was an absolutely spectacular race and spectacular finish. He really poured it on and broke the record firmly, but he’s damn lucky that he didn’t trip and fall - that curb at the end is freaking dangerous. I cannot believe they haven’t smooth that out and going on and off the road and jumping up onto the grass, that is so freaking dangerous. He’s glad he didn’t fall and ruined his race.

Maybe I’m reading these replies incorrectly. I’m here to say this kid ran an amazing race. I sure hope high school runners that are trying to be great. Don’t read too much on this board because it’s called negativity. Let’s see a lot of people trying to poke holes and Jackson’s performance in any other achievements by other kids, elites etc..
Or maybe my replies are being read incorrectly. After all, I’m using voice dictation driving down the highway!
