I read that an average paper cup fo coffee takes 60.9 grams of CO2e. Let's assume a cone cup for a marathon is half that. So 30g.
One round trip flight from Berlin to Paris is roughlly 200kg of CO2 which is thus the equivalent of 6,666 paper cups.
What a joke.
The race has to clean up the cups. The race doesn't have to clean up the pollution from the flight.
Entities make the policies that they think are in their own best interest. The race apparently thinks that it is in their own best interest to decrease the course cleanup they need to do (which presumably allows them to keep the course open for a shorter time given that less cleanup time is needed).

Obviously, but then they should be called out for lying and saying it's about the "environment" when it's not

Ok. You are welcome to call them out if you wish. I don't really care.

when volcanos erupt anywhere between a million to one hundred million tons of carbon dioxide is released. in the case of yellowstone, the last major eruption liberated giga tons carbon dioxide. that is billions of tons .....
Mount Vesuvius Italy Erupts through Mesozoic limestone and dolomite strata of the Apennines. Colli Albani Italy Magma interacts with dolomite, producing CO₂-rich explosive events. Mount Etna (base) Italy Lower flanks underlain by dolomitic limestones. Monte Amiata Italy Hydrothermal dolomitization around volcanic complex. Campi Flegrei Italy Dolomitization via volcanic fluids in subsurface.
Covid had a few races like this and I started carrying my own water. If they don't hand out paper cups why give out water at all and not force people to self carry.
Nascar arguably more popular than track, the most exciting part is the pit crew. Imagine a marathon like that.
It would be interesting to see what would happen if they stopped giving out water at all. Imagine the first unseasonably hot race and people start dropping like flies.

Rojo logic
The customer (you, me, entrant) can choose to pay for carbon offset, or do things in their life in mitigation of the lifestyle they choose, or stay at hme and run the local marathon. It is not up to the race to charge for or compensate the damage, just like their activities in daily life.
If you are doing none of the above, then quit complaining that it is therefore ok to use 6,666 paper cups.

again, the same demented 'whataboutism' logic.
Hey, the cows are farting and volcanoes are erupting, I'll just make a bonfire in my backyard ok
I've entered Paris Marathon but only recently saw the communications regarding no cups or bottles at water stations. This concerns me for several reasons, but largely bottlenecks on course around water stations causing accidents / delays to runners, runners not being able to get water if they need it (due to crowding, or if they have dropped their reusable cup/bottle and not noticed) and also asking runners to have to physically stop each time they want water. Has anyone else got any thoughts or comments on this?

Don't do a marathon in a 3rd world dump like France.
Lame. I will likely be at the Knoxville Marathon that day, join me. Great race. As a bonus if you want to explore town after the race no "migrants" will harass you and a pickpocket won't try to lift your wallet, like in france. A lot of people in france disdain Americans too, funny because without us they would be speaking german. paris is overrated......

Eh. Boston Billy stopped and walked through water stops. As Marathon Handbook put it, the race organizers have planned to make “hydration available roughly every 2 to 2.5 kilometers from the halfway mark onward, to prevent congestion and queuing.”
See? They’ll “prevent congestion.”
Oh, wait: They probably just misspelled “slightly reduce congestion.”
