Testing has increased and discouraged kenya men from competing.

Talent level has been lower.

World has caught up to training and probably better doping micro.

Kenya women are just getting started but Some of the world is catching up to all of the above for the men.

The average individual yearly income in Ethiopia is $4,592, in Kenya it is $6,520 in Uganda its $ 3,200. In the US it is $85,980. For African countries the rewards or cheating outweighs the risks if it feeds your family. But also Westerns Counties better training. Frank Shorter used to implore Steve Prefontaine to train at altitude and if he did he'd break the world record. Shorter trained at altitude and won the marathon gold and silver. It would have been back to back golds except Waldemar Cierpinski was doped. Now altitude training is a part of every ones regimen! There was a fear factor in racing against Africans. Jakob Ingebrigtsen has eliminated the fear factor.

Shorter did much of his training at sea level, especially when he was running his best.

Better training is the answer when it comes to the Ingebrigtsens and Andreas Almgren. Double threshold in its current form is from the early 2000s, the Norwegians just made it popular again. Norwegian triathletes are using it as well with great effect.

Andreas Almgren didn't show up from nowhere either, he medaled in the 800 at the U20 Worlds. He's the only runner in history to run 1:45 or better in the 800 and sub 27 in the 10k. The reason for why he's "suddenly" able to run 12:45 is because he used to be injured every single season and since switching to double threshold the injury issues have almost completely vanished.

I think Rojo overstates the case by cherry picking his data:

Non-African-born distance runners did great at the 2016 Olympics and picked up two medals in the 1500 at the "2020" Olympics in Tokyo.

And African-born runners medaled at the 2025 Tokyo World Championships in every distance event, including the marathon. Some lost only by very small margins.

That said, it is undeniable that Ethiopia underperformed expectations in the men's 5000 and 10000. And this seems to be occurring every year recently.

Part of the explanation lies in the Ethiopian selection process in these two events.

First, the level of competition required to make the team is extremely high. This year, for example, there were six Ethiopians who ran 12:50 or faster in the 5000. The Ethiopians must be in peak condition just to get a spot on the world or Olympics team. Peaking twice in one season is very difficult physiologically and psychologically. By contrast, a runner like Isaac Kimeli has an easier time making the 5000 team, enabling him to peak just once.

In a way, Ethiopia is a victim of its own success in these two events. The larger the number of world-beating runners it produces, the harder it is to make the team and the greater the need to peak in June/July rather than in September.

Second, the races used to select team members often include pacesetters and wavelights. This incentivizes runners to get very good at running fast time trials, whereas the US system rewards those who can excel in a slower championship-style race. If Cole Hocker, Isaac Kimeli, and Jimmy Gressier were citizens of Ethiopia, none of them would have been selected this year to compete in the 5000 meters.

Third, the Ethiopian selectors strongly discourage doubling. Again, the Hocker and Gressier examples are instructive. Sometimes the best pick in the 5000 is the guy who is your best runner in the 1500 or 10000.

Fourth, the selection process at times seems irrational and/or politically influenced. There is no other way to explain the decision to run Mehary in the 5000 rather than the 10000.

The dominance is weakening because of better drug testing. End of story.
