Gary Martin was talking the other day about his goal to win nationals this year, which seemed like a reasonable goal based on how he did last year. After today, he might need to shift his goal to making all-American not because he isn’t in shape, but because there are a few dozen new Kenyans who are going to wipe the floor with him (and every other American).
Some perspective. Perez of WF is currently 3rd and probably most would not have ranked near the top in ncaa.
Perez is decent.
Perez was very good in hs but of course had the health issues. In 2025 her 5000 m times were 15:47 and 15:59 Indoors and 16:32 and 16:18 Outdoors. Perhaps she has improved quite a bit since May. That would be a huge leap though. Similarly Tia Wilson's best 5000 m was 15:47 this Spring. Another huge leap? Ditto Zenah Cheptoo (15:45). Or maybe someone like Doris could run this course in low 18's (or faster). So what does low 19's really mean on this course? Recall Valby broke 18 on another fast course (Florida).
If Florida finds a fifth or Caroline Wells is able to close the gap they are a scary good team. Hilda Olemomoi still off top form, which has been the case since indoors last year.
NAU solid even with no Baloga as expected.
Colorado much better than I expected, as they’ve had a good roster for a couple years but haven’t been able to put it together. Relatively young team so opportunity for them to keep improving throughout the season (great result for freshman Mia Larochelle 21st in collegiate debut).
Oregon without Silan, Diana Cherotich, and Mia B. about where expected. Will most likely take the approach of last season where they don’t show their cards until conference. Ince further back than expected, but great result from Dalia Frias who had major surgery has been out for over a year I think and still placed 27th. Thompson further back than expected in 56th but had a long summer season.
Great performance from Angelina Perez in fourth, look for her to make nationals individually for Wake Forest if she keeps this up. Rachel Foresyth further back than expected.
in other news/meets, solid debut for Rylee Blade 20:03 for third, chamberlain solid at Cowboy Jamboree but their spread wasn’t as tight as expected (maybe Jane H. and Jenna H close it)
Now see JJ/coach changed his mind, moved the Stanford women to the Black race.
Probably a wise choice, more to the level of competition for the gals running and no chance of scoring high in the Gold race minus Bunnage, Kennedy & Scratchard.
BYU goes 2, 4, 8, 9, 11, 12, 15 without Hedengren or Hutchins and with New Mexico and OK State in the field. I foresee a winning score of under 80 at NCAAs.

Looking back now, it’s really remarkable that Graham Blanks won the last 2 ncaa titles. absolutely incredible for a kid from Georgia and running for an Ivy League school in the current landscape
Has any team ever won NCAAs (hypothetically) by taking the score of their 3-7 runners? Stanford Men 2003, maybe? Washington women 2007? Not saying that's going to happen - but curious after seeing these results today if that's ever been done.

Do you mean drop their #1&2 runners and score their 3-7 runners? I don't think it could have happened since maybe the first year that women competed at NCAAs and Virginia crushed. Even the New Mexico team from 2015 would finish 2nd with their 3-7.
4, 5, 11 ,12, 17, 51, 76 = 167 dropping #1&2
Scoring would have been Colorado 129, NM 167, Oregon 214 without adjusting all of the placers
This version of the Stanford would have finished very, very low in the Gold race. Smart move to move them. Will be interesting to see how the season pans out. Only missing two proven low sticks. Optically much better to win the Black race than to come in 16th in the Gold, or thereabouts.

Yes, my thoughts exactly.
In retrospect, a case can be made for the men (15th in Gold race) doing the same, not running projected top-5 guys Lex & James Dargan and potential top-7 Zane Bergen while racing several young guys who were coming off months-long injury layoffs.
With rookie Hanne Thomsen (time would have placed her 46th in Gold race) showing she is now the team's #3 or #4 behind Bunnage, Kennedy and possibly Scratchard, I like their chances more than the men re: competing for a podium spot come November. Assuming Amy is healthy; she's become such a mystery.
Men lots better than 15th in the nation at full-strength. However, current 7th place ranking is a big ask, especially given how often they've underperformed at NCAAs. Probably won't learn much more at Pre-Nats, either. They'll have things sorted out by ACCs.
I am a bit surprised where Seguin and Kirarei of NM placed at the Jamboree (prs of 15:33 and 15:49 I believe) yet they ran 20:59 and 21:29 on the OSU course. Of course Kirarei ran 21:03 last year and still placed 35th at Nationals so who knows? Maybe in the middle of heavy training? Yet Jepngetich placed very high.
